2005 Population Survey

This is our third year!

My two sons aged 10 and 12 correct me more than I correct them so I feel this is a fairly accurate survey of the snakes we find on our property. We live on about 8 plus acres with half being tall pasture and half semi-wooded. Tin, boards, and shingles have been placed to check plus we find a lot just by walking. A small fishless pond is also there. Most of the larger snakes are measured and we just do the best we can to not duplicate the smaller species. We also do not count juveniles in the Fall.

Totals last three years,

2003 2004 2005

293---136---93---Prairie Ring-necked Snakes

44----76----37---Rough and Western Earth Snakes

47----20----21---Western Ribbon Snakes

24----18----30---Western Worm Snakes

22----16-----6---Midland Brown Snakes

10----15-----6---Northern Red-bellied Snakes

21-----8----16---Northern Water Snakes

5------4-----2---Eastern Garter Snakes

6------6-----3---Eastern Yellow-bellied Racers

1------1-----1---Black Rat Snakes

0------3-----2---Rough Green Snakes

2------0-----1---Prairie King Snakes

14----14----12---Speckled Kingsnakes

4------4-----1---Red Milk Snakes

0------3-----2---Osage Copperheads

0------0-----1---Eastern Hog-nosed Snake

We also found a 44 inch DOR Eastern Coachwhip on November 5th on the road in front of our house.

The Red Milk Snake has been found all three years. The same snake was found about eight times this year in the same two spots it is usually found.
