Are bird populations declining?

I started out to do what seemed like a simple search. Generally speaking, are bird numbers declining? It seems to me after many years of enjoying birds, I see fewer all the time.

Yet I found no simple answer to my question. "Weedy" species are on the increase. Migratory birds are moving further north each year. Rare and endangered birds are getting rarer and more endangered.

It's not like the fish in the ocean thing where one can confidently say they are far fewer fish today than in the past.

So if a kid asks, "Are bird numbers going down," I guess the answer is, "It all depends."
