Stocky: Refinishing an old desk?

I don't have any photos of this desk, but I can describe it rather well.

It's a Queen Anne writing desk, with one drawer, about 36 inches long by 18/20 inches wide. I guess it's supposed to be dark cherry/black walnut, but it is actually just a flat black. It's a reproduction, I know. The veneer is lifting a bit on the edges, and the finish has "alligatored" badly.

I want to simply glue the veneer edges down, and then clean it GENTLY, to remove years of heavy cigarette smoke. Afterwards, I am thinking of painting it a creamy color, (white, green, blue or yellow, not sure), and stencling flowers over the whole thing.

Does this sound feasible? Is there somethin I can put on the top that will give my hard work protection, but not yellow? I don't think I'll be ruining anything with value.

Thanx in advance.
