I have been back and forth with this bird. I just cannot get over the heavy barring on the wings. No Broad-winged wears this plumage. In the middle photograph I see a hint of rufous on the shoulder. These are two indicators of a Red-shouldered Hawk. The dark malar area can also occur with a RSHA. The light above and below the eye also look like RSHA. I agree those thicker chest streaks are BWHA-like, but RSHA sometimes have them. That barring on the secondaries, however, just isn't a BWHA mark. In fact, the wing barring is a pretty good indicator to make a distinction between these two similar species- a RSHA has them, a BWHA doesn't. Therefore, I am nearly certain this is a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk.

That is a juvenile Red-tailed hawk. It is a "hatching year" bird, meaning it was born this past spring/summer.

I simply used the term that was in the article I read, with photo. That is how it was identified. Whether it is a moth or wasp makes no difference to me. I was just trying to find out what killed it. Now, I assume the tarantula won. I hope. After doing a little more research, I watched a video, almost 7 minutes long, of the battle between tarantula hawk, and tarantula. I read that they don't *usually* sting humans. To my great relief. And, I know that what I found here at my home is correctly identified. I have him (or her) in a glass jar, and used magnifier. Thanks for your thoughts.

The big birds are most likely Turkey or Black vultures; the hawk probably a Cooper's hawk. :)
