Sorry to have chimed in so late. I agree with the forum. You have to keep on trying. This is how my first experience with rooting went. I had heard so much about the baggie method. Adding your favorite rooting mix to a baggie, dipping cutting into root hormone, and then placing cutting on heat mat to root. Never worked for me. I substituted the heat mat for a heating pad. I really think the whole heating pad idea was just bad for me. It never worked. In fact, once I tried Bill's method, I never had any luck. I actually added a whole raw egg to my mix and that really helped but I don't want to give you info on yet another way of rooting. Sometimes too much info can be detrimental. I really hope you do try rooting again. I had many rooting blunders until I became successfull. In fact, I gave up for many, MANY years at rooting cuttings, but once I gave it a try again, I rooted my cuttings. Good luck and keep us all posted!! Andrew

Ron, It is obvious to me that you don't have to deal much with Bermuda grass, or you would know that it would be fully re-established within a year if it weren't under control. After 2 years, and some interim pulling and spraying where it did come up around plants placed within holes cut within the weed fabric, it is still weed free of Oxalis pes-caprae and Bermuda. This is an unqualified success in my mind, and anyone who has had to deal with these two weeds rampantly established in a garden would likely agree with me. I am not saying that it can't creep back in from the neighbors, or get reestablished if plants are removed or die and it blows in as weed seed, but the weed fabric in combination helped me resolve a nasty situation which would have required several months of spray, hoe, water, repeat several times, to control. I am just saying that it does have its uses, and can work rather well, and give excellent results. I would agree with you in that as it is most often used, without sufficient mulch cover or density of plantings to shade out potential weeds, and with no perserverance to keep on top of weeds that can still germinate on top of weed fabric and mulch, it can quickly become useless. To say that it is never worth using is simply wrong, or the quick judgement from someone who is unwilling to consider other's experience, which would seem to be your modus operandi...

That's a great thread, Anna and within is the neat Flickr link below. Some of the photos are repeated from your previous link but there are new ones. I guess what I like best are the vibrant colors. Admittedly, I don't care for some of the sharp 3-color contrasts (e.g. yellow/lavender/black). However (no offense intended for those who do like them) I don't care either for the very boring color schemes of contemporary baths. My second bath, installed in the late 80's when the basement was finished, is a very light cream (almost white), looks very 1990 and is pretty boring. While I prefer white bath fixtures, the colors available from the major companies are all boring pastels (outside of black). That's the reason I'm trying to preserve what I have but make it practical for today. Also, I might add that historical accuracy is relative to the social class one came from. As a lower middle class kid in the 60's, I and some relatives lived in 1950's suburban homes while others lived in the city (Chicago) in two flats constructed in the 1920's. Most of the two flats were not built with ceramic tile baths - they had no tiles, only painted walls. Some relatives had installed those horrible plastic 4x4 tiles that were available after WWII. One uncle remodeled his into the 1950's look - built-in vanity with blue fixtures. The tract home I'm in was built in 1957. Speaking with some original owner neighbors (3 homes - they are all in their 80's!), these homes came with ceramic tile baths but no tile in the kitchen. Some homes were upgraded to add ceramic tile to the kitchen (like mine); others added it later. Bath fixtures were white but many upgraded to colored fixtures. From the homes I've visited, (for sale/open house, estate sales), it seems the vast majority opted for a pink bathroom, but they are all glossy 4x4 tile. All have had to do 'something' about the tub surround because the tiles were simply applied to the plaster walls. Mine is unique in that the shower was hardly used - the tiles around the tub are intact. These tract homes were targeted at families where dad was in the trades or lower level management. All are 1200 to 1400 sq ft, with what would be considered today tiny baths and bedrooms. As the standard of living improved, the luxuries formerly available only to the upper class became available down the chain. As with so many things in life, attention to detail makes all the difference. Reading the entire add, I find this: "Publication Date : 1998-02-01". That would be February 1st, 1998. It seems the seller made a mistake in their listing. The buy it now price plus shipping comes to almost what this book would cost at any auto parts store. Not a very good deal, IMO. Hayne's manuals are good for propping up an uneven chair leg, and little else. Detailed info would be found in a real repair manual, such as a Motor manual or Toyota factory service manual.
