ItÂs been three weeks now and the snapper is doing fine. I have seen him several times moving around under the ice. When the pond is not frozen, he seems to be under some submerged plants out in the middle. The water quality is good, and my painted turtles in the front pond have survived several winters. I was able to account for all my fish last week. I also saw a frog at the bottom, so the snapper has not been eating everything. I have a large industrial net that can hold the turtle if I am lucky enough to get him. He seems to go to the same areas of the pond when it is iced over and I am hoping he starts to go there when it is thawed. I have a large tub with a lid that I have cut holes into. Once I have the turtle in the tub, there is a lake about 20 miles away that will be his new home. I have had many suggestions about baiting a hook or getting a trap, but I really donÂt want to risk harming the turtle, I just want him out of my pond.

That's clearly (as Rhizo indicated) a Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). ~Mike

I don't think the Painteds have the serrated edges on the back rim of their shells and the yellow with large black spots at the underside midsection lean me more towards a Yellowbelly.

It's a Gentleman's Dresser. You don't often see them intact these days. They usually are long parted out. In our family, we have the chest and the mirror, but the ornate mirror surround and two smaller side cabinets are long gone to who knows where. Candles were often placed on top of the side cabinet to illuminate the user in the mirror. It looks to me that all the hardware is original and, as you can see, the drawers are beautifully made. Some have only one of the smaller side cabinets placed off to the side. Some also have "Eastlake" style spoon carving on the drawer fronts and top of the mirror surround. In the case of our pieces, my Grandmother followed the trend of the 1930's and painted that beautiful oak pink followed later on with white. I had it stripped and refinished back to the original "golden oak" in the early 1990's. If I had to guess, this piece was original offered through the Sears catalog. You may be able to determine if that's true with a little research.
