Some sort of a quail, but I don't think it is a native species. Maybe one of the Coturnix? http://www.birding.in/birds/Galliformes/blue-breasted_quail.htm

If it's *larger* than most of the hawks you see around, then it's probably a Red-tailed Hawk. This bird has a lot of white on the underside to be a Red-shouldered (and in the second photo you can sort of see the beginning of a possible dark band across the underside - another Red-tailed characteristic). The juvenals won't have a red tail, which can make ID difficult.

I thought it looked like a UK house and garden but was fooled by the OP name ;-) No way of knowing what sort of cherry it came from but since they don't come true from seed, even if it is from an eating cherry, it won't produce the same kind of fruit. It could also be from a wild cherry, Prunus avium, brought in by a bird. All your friend can do is to wait and see what the fruit are like.

Can you please id this vine growing in my friend's backyard?

Primrose jasmine is not a vine, though I can understand how it might appear to be one. It's a shrub that sends out long arching stems, and it can get 8 ft high and 10 ft wide. It suckers and is often used to cover slopes.

Immature redtail. It's got a rather full crop. It's just eaten a nice big meal. (Notice the full, rounded white area beneath it's chin.) Did someone feed this bird some dead rodents?

I'm the friend for whom Peggy so kindly posted this picture. The bird swooped down into the compost pile, caught something (a baby rabbit?), flew off to the top of the swing set, and was eating it while my husband took the picture. You can see some of the guts hanging off the side. An amazing bird, and huge! It came back several times. Thanks a lot for your help, everybody.
