Ana, we prefer to make the tatsoi salad for parties because the greens keep their shape, they are also called spoon, even with the dressing look fresh after a few hours, lettuce would not do that. It also tastes mild which is a plus for many dishes. If you don't already have is a good idea to buy a salad spinner to keep greens fresh anytime you need it. Like today, after we went shopping and came back tired, Cheryl had a dish with leftovers roasted veggies and tatsoi, everything warm from the microwave in 5 minutes. We bought some nice colorful containers like the chinese take out for everybody to take cookies home after they baked them. Tom, we should all grow greens like I said before, all you need is a container. I made Willy today a salad of tatsoi, tomatoes, red onions, calamata olives, tuna, with a little bit of olive oil and lime juice. And I mixed it with hot pasta, he said it was delicious! It took 10 minutes. Cheryl was saying, I wonder why more people don't grow this green? It is better than spinach. Fresh from the garden or cooked. Silvia

Well, the cynic in me says that even if one is trying to stay organic (and I do garden completely organically) that buying corn gluten is probably a joke because it's most likely made with genetically modified corn. Sigh. Anyway, this isn't a discussion of organic vs. non-organic, and I apologize if I seemed to try to make it one. I just like to gently suggest other options, and since the OP did ask for some, I offered. Which brings me back to the newspaper. I am this very day going out to re-mulch a shrub border that I originally did last fall. Why re-mulch? Because when I filled this raised-bed border with trucked-in soil, and then mulched, I did not put down newspaper, (gosh, that soil looked so nice and pristine, lol!) and now it is absolutely covered in weeds, right through the mulch. Soooo, off to weed, pull back the existing mulch, lay down a nice thick layer of newspaper, and re-mulch. That should keep it nice for a few years until the paper breaks down and it needs to be redone. :) Dee

I don't think it is a huge problem, unless you plan on planting below the preen line. Supposedly it just keeps seeds from breaking through where it is laid. You may still have have bulbs or tubers go through it, as preen mostly is effective against annual re-seeding weeds. I've had bulb weeds and other perennials come through newspaper and six inches of mulch in just one season of growing.

Jo, spend almost 2 hours (with my dear husband) covering the hostas with anything we could find. At the end we were just covering them with newspaper and hoping there is no wind. You don't realize you have that many until you have to cover them all. Some have over 50 pips and there just isn't anything big enough to cover those guys. All the new purchases are in the garage. I filled the huge pots around the poo,l and the potato vines looked a little wilted this morning so I am thinking they didn't like how cold it got last night. So all those pots are in the garage too. Now tomorrow I will have to move everything back out and pick up all the newspaper. The things I do for my hosta! (I guess I should just shut up and be grateful we aren't expecting snow tomorrow!)
