Can someone Id this bird for me?

Also Posted a message in the bird watching forum on this mystery bird, but wanted to post here as well just to see If someone might be able to figure out what kind of bird or raptor this is, thanks! There are several pics on my flickr page too, just linked to this particular one but have quite a few more of same bird posted! Thanks

Kind of a funky one, but from these photos it looks rather like a Red-tailed Hawk wearing a falconry hood. I could of course be hideously wrong....

Oh! Thanks, I've shown these to several people and everyone, like myself, has been stumped. I know nothing about falconry and training raptors so idk if it's normal that I didn't see anyone anywhere near when I saw this "hawk". No one around except for the other bird that's in a few of the photos, and a few smaller birds that looked to be mobbing either this bird or the other large bird, idk, I Wonder if this bird might have been lost?? Thanks again

I saw/heard one just the other day, so they are making there way down the coast. When we were in Alaska 2 years ago, I was happy to have seen one there as well. They are fiesty little ones ") Taken this past February on their way up the coast.

Well first you would need to tell us where the picture was taken. Then look in bird books from that area. It isn't anything native to the US. At first glance it looked like a closeup of a caterpillar. Very pretty birds!! Donna

BN is correct, ..they should be coming here soon and will do allot of damage or kill trees. Here a male drinking sap after inflicting wounds/holes on one of several of my seedling Colorado spruce tree. Click on, [video] Put up audio all the way. Mom with offspring visiting one of several seedling birch tree. .. They eat the Oriole jelly, guess better then my trees! Since I planted hundreds of trees, it is a smorgasbord for them, wish they go to the neighbor,...not much to eat there.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean they were hunting, they were just gliding around in circles, very, very high, from what I have read, this is common behavior for red-tailed hawks around this time of year and has something to do with mating. I was able to get a good look with my binoculars and they were definitely hawks. They have been doing this lately, more so on sunny days, usually at least two, sometimes more, but that day there were more of them than I have ever seen! Very pretty!

It is a red tailed hawk, but it is not wearing a hood at all! I'm a falconer and a hood coers the whole head, just look it up on google... You wouldn't see the eyes, and the bird wouldn't be able to fly very far on the unlikely event it escaped with a hood on. Plus there are no anklets on its legs. This bird is wild.
