Anyone familiar with them?
We've been here for 8 years now & this morning I found my 1st salamander since our move. Tipped over one of my outdoor horse water troughs to clean & refill, & underneath was a small black salamander. It had quite obviously lost a part of its tail at some point in its young life, because it was sporting a rounded stub. I estimate its length - if the tail were still complete - at round 2" to 2-1/4". Tail was not keeled.
As it's rather breezy & warm out today, I didn't want to stress it, so quickly upended the trough & let it scurry back underneath.
I've perused my guides & did an internet search on VA salamanders, but the problem seems to be that entries are so vague as to territory - i.e. here's the range, but it's essentially found everywhere, sort of stuff.
Any ideas?
Next time I empty the tub, if he's still there, I'll try to take a pic of him.
