Identification for this baby raptor?

My daughter found this bird in the street in the front of her house. She thinks maybe it fell from a nest in the tall trees along the street. We live in the Northeast. The mother hasn't come by yet, but we would like to know the type of bird so we can keep watch.

Call a local bird rehabilitator ... it's well-feathered.

It doesn't look like a typical hawk or owl baby ... does it have raptor talons?

Thanks for responding. I guess he may just be a dove or pigeon?

Thanks for the help! Carol, your plant is gorgeous, but I don't think I have that. Mine definitely climbs vigorously and has small round fruit that are pale in color and not green. Farmerdilla, I know I tossed zukes and cukes, maybe some yellow squash too, into the compost heap b/c I grew them last year. FIL gave us pumpkins and those ended up there too (Heaven help us). Didn't grow cantaloupes but I may have bought one or two so that might be a possibility. I'm trying to post a link to a photo right now. I hope it works! I found this post after I had posted on the "pets" forum the following: "We have a pup, 2 1/2 months old, weighs 8 lbs. We live in the middle of woods in a very rural area. She loves being outside and is gradually exploring further and further from the front porch. We have all kinds of wildlife here, but my main concern are the owls and hawks. Are they a danger to an 8 pound pup? I can't seem to find a definite answer online about this, varying opinions everywhere. We have barred owls and great horned owls, which are pretty big. We also have red-tailed hawks. At what size do we not worry anymore about the pup? We also have seen racoons, foxes, bobcat, and have been told we have coyotes, but I've never seen one. I'm not as concerned about those because they pretty much stay away from the house. Our property is big but is fenced with field fence all around." All the answers on that were "be concerned". I'm seeing both sides to this here. So I guess to be safe I'd better keep a close watch until she gets to be around 15 pounds, which should be in about 6 more weeks.

I agree w/ the ID. It'd do better in a smaller pot & I'd suggest amending that soil considerably. If nothing else get a bag of Cactus & Succulent (C&S) soil & perlite, mix together 50/50 & try a pot only slightly larger than the plant. Otherwise, the combination of bad soil & too large a pot combine to increase the risk of root rot. Lena

Dove of some sort. They build flimsy nests, so finding one on the ground is common.

I pick them up and put them into a tall bush or a low branch close to where I found them ... the parents will find it.

Yes, definitely a little dove. Likely a mourning dove. Not a raptor just a seed eater. Put it in a tree or bush or call a wildlife rehabilitator, or animal control. Might be learning to fly in which case may spend some time on the ground before he gets it right!
