If you have an iPad or iPhone you will not find a better app for birding or for that matter book than Ibird pro. I literally use it to call in birds to my house. I can call in several types easily using that app and a monster blue tooth speaker. For example I had several Pileated woodpeckers at my old house but hadnt seen one here at my new place. I put the call out several times one day and nothing. But the next morning there he was in all his glory eating worms at the base of a tree in the yard. Since then I go out every few days and call him and his mate to the yard just for a flyover and a peek. I can do the same with doves, titmouse, red bellied woodpeckers, and the list goes on. The calls are actual calls of the birds. As for identification you just put your state and then what you seen and it will narrow your birds. Highly recommended it. It covers every detail of the bird and allows you to just select what you saw, like color size location and then it will give you results for you to pick what you saw. You can also favorite your birds to easily call them up later and make notes on when and what you saw,

Okay...getting back to the original poster. Millymoo, I didn't sit down and think really hard about the sound you described (so forgive me if I overlook something simple), but what I do when I do not know a bird call is I use the Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds website. I can typically narrow down the approximate type of bird that I am hearing and I just begin navigating the website. Perhaps begin with Northern Cardinal (they do make many different types of calls/songs but their vocal style and clarity remains the same). I can say that the N. Cardinal does vocalize a crisp, loud, clear "birdie, birdie, birdie" song that is quite common. Could be what you heard. Hi popmama........I meant the sound you described. I've never heard a roaring type sound when the male woodcock dives, so you're probably right that you have nighthawks. I'm envious! I don't understand why we don't seem to have them anymore. We do have woodcocks though, who seem to sound a lot like the nighthawks while they're cruising overhead. Even those, though, aren't as common here as earlier. Same goes for bobwhites. I hope it's just a normal variation thing, and not like the "canary in the coal mine". You're so lucky with your nighthawks. What cool birds! (But aren't they all?) :) I did want to ask Donnie.........did you speed up that recording? I've just never heard doves singing that fast.
