Juvenile Coopers Hawk

On February 10-08, I had what I think was a juvenile Coopers Hawk. His prey that day was a starling. He stayed in my yard for two hours enjoying his catch. Some published reports say that the coopers hawk does not come back to my area until March. Also at the end of January there were signs that a hawk had taken a dove. Does anyone know if the Coopers hawk overwinters in Michigan?

The Cooper's and Sharp-shinned both overwinter here in South Central Wisconsin...and both are very aware of the feeders!

I live in the Tampa Bay Florida area and was lucky enough to have a pair of nesting Coopers Hawks on the grounds of the complex where I live. I was surprised to see that the juveniles remain around the nest until they are driven off as young adults. Like many young adult humans they do not like to leave the easy life at home.

This thread is getting long, but I'd rather wait until the new year (2012) to start a new thread. That way I avoid problems of naming it - I can start out with 2012 #1. I hope this isn't a problem with loading for too many people. ................................................................................... Looks like a Coopers to me as well. I had one spend the day in the backyard on Saturday. Needless to say, I didn't much in the way of other birds. ;)

It looks from here to be a juvenile Cooper's Hawk, as already stated. The tail on Accipiters is long with wide bands, and this bird has that. As for the differences between Accipiters, juvenile Cooper's Hawks have fine brown chest streaks that usually come short of the belly, and this bird has that. So, good call.

Yes, your bird was a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Looked like a big, nicely marked one. Sorry it took so long for someone to respond; I hadn't checked this forum in some time. Cooper's Hawks are Accipiters and Accipiters are built for ambushing and chasing birds around and about. I have read they do occasionally take smaller squirrels (such as Eastern Gray), but the vast majority of the time they stalk bird feeders to take birds. The squirrel probably felt safe challenging the Cooper's for that reason. Had that been a Red-tailed Hawk hanging around, there may have been a different reaction by the squirrel....
