Cooper's Hawk?

I thought juvenile cooper's hawk, but wanted to see if someone could confirm that for me. Not sure about the age thing but thought this one might be young (if this is a cooper's) since eyes aren't red. Seeing these (if this is a cooper's) more and more now!! thanks!

Looks like a Coopers to me as well. I had one spend the day in the backyard on Saturday. Needless to say, I didn't much in the way of other birds. ;)

Harryshoe's image is an adult Cooper's. You are correct, kathy9norcal. Note the tubular chest, thick legs, squared head, "Roman" nose, and eyes that are set back from the bill. Tail tip is an unreliable markon a perched bird (so I have learned through experience) due to feather position/wear. Also, on your Cooper's, second pic down- this adult bird has a pale nape to the neck. That is a good mark for a Cooper's. An adult Sharp-shinned has a dark nape of the neck that makes the Sharpies appear "hooded" rather than "capped". Cooper's appear capped.

They nest in the mature elms and maples on our street in front of our house. I feed my birds in my back yard where the hawks can't view them from the mature trees. A neighbor nearby set up a feeder in the middle of his yard, but soon noticed that the hawks would swoop in and make a meal out of them as they had a clear view from their nesting site. So he strategically moved his feeder location out of their view. I've landscaped my back yard to give birds various shrubs and trees, including evergreens, for shelter and protection from predators. When I see the Coopers Hawk (or chicken hawk as my neighbor calls them) exploring my back yard, I chase him away.

Yes, your bird was a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Looked like a big, nicely marked one. Sorry it took so long for someone to respond; I hadn't checked this forum in some time. Cooper's Hawks are Accipiters and Accipiters are built for ambushing and chasing birds around and about. I have read they do occasionally take smaller squirrels (such as Eastern Gray), but the vast majority of the time they stalk bird feeders to take birds. The squirrel probably felt safe challenging the Cooper's for that reason. Had that been a Red-tailed Hawk hanging around, there may have been a different reaction by the squirrel....

For the last several years, I have had a pair of Coopers Hawk, Red Shouldered and a Red Tail nest in the acres around me. For 2 yrs I was fortunate to have a gray phase red tail. I would say that as long as they feel safe and fed, they will be back.
