Was just watching the Lucy the Owl cam (side by side with the eagles), and one of the babies backed right up to the camera and pooped into it (toward it)! Funny because it was so unexpected! The owl babies don't do much! Only 20-some viewers! The eagles have been great! Very active much of the time! When I tuned in, one of the babies was "out" and there were almost 150,000 viewers. The wind picked up and the baby crawled "inside," and a couple thousand viewers dropped off very quickly. Just a couple minutes ago ago the mother was up and doing stuff (butt to camera, couldn't see the babies), and then the father arrived with dinner. Couldn't see the feeding--butt to camera again! The mother left right after the father got there---he looked, as if to say, where are YOU going! Now Daddy Dearest is sitting on the Peeps, and the bloody dinner leftovers are laying in front of him! Chicks are taking a warm nap! Viewers going down again! Papa's pulling feathers from around him in against his body to insulate them more! I love it when the adult birds are sitting on the chicks and they suddenly look down as if to say: What the H___ are you doing down there??? Have stuff to do outside! Time to x out for a while! If anybody hasn't found it yet, watch the video of what the area around the nest looks like! I had visions of them being out in The Wild somewhere, but there are actually houses right under them! I was not a sparrow hawk as it was mostly brown. I could not see its head but was a long fan shaped tail as it manuvered. A posibility is a merlin. A merlin is on the January 2008 Missouri conservation department calander and the picture is very close to the color. I have not taken to time to research merlins and they may be too small. I estimate the bird was about 12-14 long, tail skinny where attaches to body.

You can't disturb a nest once it has eggs in it. If you at all prevent a hawk from raising it's young, it's called a 'take'. The hawk may or may not abandon the nest and the young may or may not get the food they need to grow and if any of the disturbance is your doing, US Fish & Wildlife will be secretly filming you and trying to build a case. Many people get on a 'witch hunt' over hawks and 'their rights'. It's a small minded neighborhood thing because many view the hawks now as cool thanks to nest cams. My advice is to remove any tall trees that would be an ideal nesting site if budget allows, or make them unappealing before nesting season by paying a tree climber to add a fake racoon or fake owls that move, or other bright, big objects that move such as huge balloons with eyes, large shiny pinwheels with tape that flashes in the breeze. Add several so as to overwhelm the hawk as it first approaches it's old nesting area. It may not stop the hawk from coming to the area but may pursuade it to nest elsewhere. Just make sure that the type of hawk you're trying to encourage to move isn't considered endangered in your area. Your local game commission may have that information. A pic provided to them will be helpful. I know red shouldered hawks are becoming more scarce due to red tail hawks taking over good hunting and nesting grounds. Just check with your local authorities before taking any action.

We raised a kestrel (Spsrrow hawk)from a baby that my son found on the road. She was almost dead when he found her. and I used my special formula (carnation evaporated milk mixed with water, and Karo syrup), because we couldn't get her to eat. Boy, she revived almost imediately after getting some of the formula!! Even as an unfledged chick, she was so strong! It was our pleasure to see her on her way when she flew and we taught her how to hunt; and that fall I was out in our back pasture when I heard the distinctive cry of kestrels. They were migrating south. I gave my whistle, and the whole flock turned around, flew over my head, and landed inj a wooded copse nearby. Now, I will always believe that our "Zephyr" was in that flock; else why did they turn around when they heard my whistle? Watch the median strip of the interstate .You can always see one hovering there looking at an insect from about 20 feet. up!
