Acrobats of the sky

Hello all!

I had the priviledge of witnessing the flight of a Sparrow Hawk pair and the poor unfortunate sparrow that had very bad timing.

I was working my part-time job a the local hardware store one summer at the front desk; when I saw a flash of something whip past me and the customer I was waiting on. Soon afterwards, a flutter of feathers and it was over.

I was informed by a couple of the employees who were use to seeing the pair every summer, that they enter from the open doors in the back, get their fill of the sparrows that nest in the warehouse and then leave before summer end.

I had never seen a bird of prey up close in the wild except at our local zoo, which is not the same as in the wild of course. I was blesed with a second, closer viewing when I took a break and went up stairs to humand resoures only to spot the pair right above my head while standing on the stairs.

I'm sure you more experienced bird watchers/hobbists are use to seeing them, but, for me, my breath was taken away that day.

While I felt sorry for the sparrows, it was something to see them fly in and out of the beams above our heads that summer. I envied their gift of flight and could only wonder what it must feel like to have such a magnificent gift.

Flo
