Bird in the Carolina, ID

I've seen it twice now. It is a smaller sized bird, maybe smaller than a bluebird or comparable size. The face, body and tail are black or appear black. The chest area is white and the belly/rump area is rust color. I see it only on the ground and not at the feeder. It doesn't seem to be at all intimiated by other birds or aggressive towards them. My camera is broke so I'm out of the ability to take pics now.

Sounds like a towhee - they feed on the ground, and scratch like chickens. Check out the link below.

That would be it exactly. And I have the perfect area behind my property for their living and nesting habits but now I worry about the kids going back there that they'll ruin a nest or step on eggs. I'll have to look more into them.

Absolutely Lesser Goldfinch. By the way, I don't know how much time you spent looking at warbler pics, but you would have saved yourself that effort by noting the bill shape: warblers have much thinner bills. Bill shape and size is often a good clue to point you in the right direction; bright colour patterns you'll likely remember without trying, but the bill really needs to be looked at (unless we're talking about a toucan or spoonbill etc). looks like a slate colored dark eyed junco to me. one sure tell is they have a light pinkish yellow bill and white feather in sides of tail.. hard to tell from your picture. most people call them snowbirds cause they show up with the snow and bad weather. there are many different variations in color patterns on the juncos but they all have the dark eyes.

Thats definitely a female Slider (Trachemys scripta). The particular subspecies (if you believe in that sort of thing) looks to be a yellowbelly slider (T. s. scripta). She was probably looking for a spot to lay her eggs or had finished and was heading back to her pond. I'd release her in a nearby pond/river/lake. While the injury looks nasty, I have little doubt she'll recover from it - I've got a turtle that had an injury almost exactly like that (nose was bitten off) and she recovered just fine with no help from me. I wouldn't entrust her to a wildlife rehab center - if its anything like the one's I've worked at its run by people who love bunnies and chipmunks and cute and fuzzy things and don't know jack about reptiles - the end result being that the turtles and other reptiles are severely neglected and not properly cared for. I would definitely have no hesitation about putting her back - trust me, she'll be just fine. ~Mike
