It looks like a raspberry to me. Mostly, I'm looking at the little 1-2" horizontal laterals (well, they're vertical in the first picture) which die at the end of the their first season. But, I'm wondering if it was possibly a mislabeled raspberry? If it was Heritage, being an everbearer, it should have given fruit at the end of the first season. I'm wondering if it's a summer variety which would only give fruit on it's second season. The other reason why I suggest this is because the cane is so long. My summer varieties here in my yard always seem to grow taller than the everbearers (but I'm not sure if that's just me). Either way, looks like it could use some support/a trellis. If it is a raspberry, where there was that one cane from last year, you can expect a bunch more right near by pretty soon. Mine here in RI will start poking their heads out in about 3 weeks. Give it some nice compost right now, and it will thank you for it. I'm going out on a limb here by going against the opinion in much of this thread... Time will tell! -Glenn

Have you created many brom paintings? Thanks Devo - I have recently completed a series of 10 artworks of bromeliads - it was my post-frost therapy after the hideous winter my garden suffered from. I had already created many cyanotypes, but had not completed the hand-colouring. I exhibited the 10 works, framed, at the Aust. Brom conference a few weeks ago. But before framing, I had them scanned at high resolution for printing purposes. I am in the process of getting sets of 8 greeting cards printed from that series, as well as unframed poster prints, to sell on international eBay and nurseries/gift shops. Hope I don't end up with a garage full of unsold cards! The framed originals are for sale, but not cheap - they are very labour intensive. Cyanotypes are a very early form of photographic imaging, using highly toxic chemicals (including cyanide) - like blue-print maps and plans of yesteryear. It is a complex process. I combine computer technology to create the large negatives, then expose the painted chemicals and negs to ultra-violet light (good old sunshine), rinse the paper in water, and then dried - resultant image is a blue-toned monoprint. Then I choose ones I like to selectively hand-colour with coloured pencils. Some I leave as straight cyanotypes, if they work well as is. All my brom artworks originate from photos I have taken from my own garden. Here are 2 more. Again, the neo one has exaggerated colour, compared to the original. Hope you enjoy :) Cheers, Kerry

You are welcome, I am glad my comments were helpful. I love roses too. This is the end of my sixth summer of gardening in western Washington, having moved from north Alabama. I am still getting used to gardening up here so I can sympathize with you. My favorite comment from a rose gardener to me a number of years ago upon my lamenting on my lack of knowledge of roses was that no one is born knowing about roses, it's a learned subject. Some people know more, some less, that's all. I'll never know as much as that woman! on one hand, there is so much to learn about roses but otoh rose gardening is also very simple. It's all just a variation of dirt, water, sun and a pruning tool. Gean
