Yes, the gray fox will climb fencing. While they may be listed as nocturnal, we have seen them from 2:30 in summer/spring afternoon or 10:00 in the morning, right off the corner of our deck. More predation will occur in the spring when they have kits to feed, so that is the time to be really vigilant with your chickens. Foxes will move extremely fast for the kill. Generally you will only find a small pile or two of feathers where they have grabbed your chicken but no other evidence. When you find partial remains it was probably a racoon kill; unmauled whole remains may have been a poisonous snake (we have copperheads here), mauled whole remains are usually left by domestic dogs. Wild animals are killing to eat or for defense in the case of the snake, domestic dogs kill for the thrill. If you have alot of livestock, live in an Ag district or rural area (more than 5 acres) with a predator problem (from hard experience, I consider roaming domestic dogs a predator problem) a livestock guardian dog is your best investment.

Bradley...no, he/she did no harm. They are really quite small, maybe about 5 kg. Rhizo...they are gorgeous and this one appeared very sleek and healthy! And we have plenty of voles for it to eat, as we unfortunately found after digging our potatoes...lots of damage. While we have always seen the occasional red fox in the area, the native gray foxes are much less common here in central VA. I understand that they can climb trees! I just hope it does not tangle with our cat.

The vegetation in the background isn't right and this species of fox doesn't occur anywhere near Florida. Everything about that animal looks like a Swift Fox (Vulpes macrotis) to me although the hair is a bit short. But the size of the ears, color, shape of the body, etc. all look like macrotis to me. And the habitat in the background further supports this ID....assuming it was shot in North America? I've seen a lot of photos on the internet with the wrong location listed. The Cross Fox (and all the other color patterns of Red Fox) have a heavier muzzle and smaller ears.

Roofing is tough because the samples you see at a supplier or from a roofing contractor often times will look different once applied to your build. The samples themselves are from a different lot than what is supplied and can have variations. If you, and im sure you've already been looking, drive around various neighborhoods, you might see a combination you like similar to what you want on your build. Might not be the same brand or shingle type, but ask for sample packs from your supplier and take them along with you and see if you can come close that way. Here in the desert there are a lot of greys in shingled roofs with the theory that it reflects better than dark keeping the attics cooler. My experience roofing is that once the heat is transfered into the shingle themselves, color has little to do with it. Anyhow, i've never seen any grey tone that appear white but lighter colors appear when the shingle is more monotone, ( the same color granules throughout), compared to shingles that have various colored granules around the edging ,(usually darker highlights), around the perimeter of the tabs. The timberline series that you speak of generally have these highlights as they are a dimensional shingle and heightens the effect.
