Bird ID and another question

4 birds hit my porch glass windows all at once. 2 flew off but 2 didn't make it, as you can see from the pictures. I watched them for about 15 minutes and they barely moved, so I assume when I go back they'll be dead. :(

I believe they are yellow tailed finches, and that one is female and the other is male, since their breasts are different colors. I've never had them before, so I want to make sure that's what they are, and I also want to know if anyone can summon a guess as to why all 4 of them hit the glass at once. They were flying fast, it made quite a noise. I would do anything to keep it from happening again.

Maybe a Cedar Waxwing. We had them two years ago.

They are Waxwings, and probably Cedar, unless you live in Canada. Thee is no bird in North America called "Yellow Tailed Finch". The Peterson's Guide to birds is a great resource, as is also the National Geographic guide, the Sibley, and the Golden. They are great to have around the window where you have your feeder. I am attaching a link to stop window strikes.

Hey there, Gang! Our dark eyed Juncos showed up here in S. Wisconsin early this week (much to my surprise)! I took it as a sign that winter is on its way. I can always tell the Juncos from other birds because of the very dark back and that big, fat WHITE belly! Thanks, Calliope, but I think it's bigger than a kingbird. I shot this with a 200mm lens. The cropped close up is less than 1/8 of the original photo. And you're right about the beak. Eagle Marsh has become a surprising pass through for migrating birds. I'm guessing that this one was on the way to somewhere else...

LOL Thanks on the shoes... Yes, I knew immediately that someone had been in my office... it was an inside job so they were covering their tracks so to speak. Aside from the dirt on the floor, the plant stand was about an inch or so to the right AND they left my window screen up when they stuck the goods outside the window so they could come back and collect them later... How do I know it was an inside job? The windows are the tilt in kind, but the clips on BOTH sides are broken, so the window will ONLY stay in the frame if it's locked. So they couldn't have entered through the window and couldn't have LEFT that way, which means they came through the building. It happened during the Easter break almost everyone leaves by three, except for me, but I was out of the office that day, So she'll grow UP so to speak... I was wondering why she seemed so top heavy. get her something to climb... gotta build something. Thanks!

I have a neurological disorder that prevents me from retaining information. I knew that wasn't a Finch, and I know what a Waxwing is. I was just so distraught I came here immd and posted. I guess they just saw the trees on the other side. Anyway finally, after about an hour, they were gone. So I'm telling myself they survived. I just hate to see any animal struggle or suffer. Plus I've been waiting on them to come; the new neighbors chopped down all the trees next door, and I'm sure that spooked them. I added a few feeders and they're slowly coming back. But I don't want them returning like that! And they're such beautiful birds.
