When to start Onion seeds in Houston area

This is a question for experienced onion growers that have started plants from seed.

I would like to start some Texas Early Grano Onion seeds. I have checked several sources for the date to plant these seeds and whether to start in pots or direct seed and everything seems to be contradictory.

My Texas Organic gardening book says plant seeds early Feb. Another website I found said plant seeds in October and thin in February and if you plant later than October, you will probably have a failure. Another one said start seeds in December and transplant into the garden in January. I'm in zone 9.

Help! What is correct?

Do I direct seed or start indoors? Also, what is the optimal temp. for onion growth? I've had trouble finding that. Can they take heat or frost?

Thanks for any answers or help...:)
