Thailand bird slideshow, past 3 days

I know, I know. This forum is mostly US birds but I was actually inspired to take a job here in Saraburi, Thailand from seeing photos posted here by a former forum member who birded here in Saraburi, Thailand.

If anyone is interested, or just bored, these are some of the birds and critters photographed since Dec. 10, mostly along the jungle edge of the hotel parking lot, taken while I was also grading a pile of exams. In fact, I need to get back to work right now..

I am interested Rachel! I always love seeing birds of other countries, and it's fun just looking at the landscape pics too. Makes me feel like I am going for a visit! Gosh, that Coppersmith Barbet is sure a stunner. Are both sexes so bright? I like the color contrast on the Greater Coucai, and the wonderful tail on the Green Billed Malkoah. I noticed that one pic of the Malkoah showed a lot of blue coloration where the others did not. Was this the same bird in different light, or did you perhaps shoot a male and a female? That Drongo sure has an interesting tail. My lands, you'd think those things would be bitten off by predators a lot! Thanks so much for sharing these pics. I have enjoyed them.~`Angie (in Georgia)

Why, thank you! Both those Coppersmith Barbets look alike, and the one in the hole is the mate of the one standing on the branch. They make this weird little konking sound endlessly that sounds like someone tapping on a sheet of copper with a hammer-hence the name.

The Greater Coucal is large, like a ring-necked pheasant, and has a very long tail as well. In fact, it seems like a third of the birds have long tails, for some reason. The Green-billed Malkoha genders are alike, but I was closer to the first one I photographed. Dunno about that Drongo tail, but they do hang around semi-open areas, so maybe the tails do cause a problem in thick brush.

Hi every one! Can you believe it? I still cannot believe my luck and I was there!!! Again while on my way to work this morning there was someone white and *quite* chunky looking flying across the road. I pulled over, backed up a bit, and admired a stunningly beautiful snowy Owl perched on top of a utility pole. This one was much larger than the first Owl I had seen and was more heavily barred. The barring seemed darker / black. I believe this Owl was a female as her face, nape of the neck and center of the breast were white. From what I was able to research that does describe the female snowy. Maybe this was an immature but I did not find much description of them. Any way ... I am 113% sure this was another Snowy Owl! What a wonderful start to the day! As my luck would have it, I did not have my camera in the car for the past week. Had the camera been there then for sure the Owl would NOT! LOL! So that was a great start to the day. I was 20 minutes late to work but work is just soooo over-rated. LOL! The rest of the day was downhill but who cares? I saw another Snowy Owl! The Owl was about 1 mile south of the earlier sighting on Rt. 83 in N. Ridgeville again. C3D and 2 Snowy sightings this year!

PM2: Thank you, glad you like the little stories and I'm glad not to have had hamsters - but I did lose a turtle under a washing machine in 1953...RIP. I had the same problem with hungry and curious climbers a few years ago and applied mineral oil to the pole which did create a slippery slope of comedy for two days. Then I felt horrible thinking that if mineral oil does that laxative business to humans (Oh, dear) so I stopped greasing the pole so as not to grease the little guys'..., well, you get the idea. After making several totally ineffective homemade devices to thwart the clever little tykes, I went to the hardware store and bought the Audobon deflector (recommended by Claire) which, two years later, has not been conquered. Pure and simple, it works. With or without a squirrel deflector, all the ground feeders - Republicans, Democrats, Independents alike -benefit from the big wingers swinging and squabbling over everything. Thank you for your kind comments! We visited the fish hatchery last weekend but didn't see one migrant. Yesterday morning we hit the bird lottery, though. A rare migrant and two lifers, as well as a warbler. I took so many photos (over 1700) that my computer has been barely functional, so have had trouble working on the photos. Time to install a second hard drive, just for photos (sigh)

Thanks! When I took these photos, migration was in full swing and the leaves hadn't even started turning yet. Now most of the leaves are gone and the migrants are gone. Birdky members still report them, but mostly south and west of us, usually near large bodies of water. Of course, now the winter birds are returning..saw a large flock of Fox Sparrows on Narnia Ridge this morning

Hi Rachel!!!... how is that you are here in Thailand and I did not know!?... we should find each other and shoot out sometime!!!... that would be fun!... family dinner first, perhaps??? ;)

Yes, it was you, Alex! Ha, never know who you will influence! I'm off until Jan 12, don't have my work visa yet so hanging around here. My only transportation is my scooter or bus, so give me a call!

I was actually on my way to teach at a university in Costa Rica first, in June, but misplaced my passport so came back to Kentucky, and when I saw the teaching opening here I remembered all your bird photos and how I'd promised myself to go birding here next chance I had.
