Mallards are considered waterfowl as well and I feed mine cracked corn and grain ( wild bird starter). Also give them nuts and dried berries wild bird food which they love. If you mow your grass, you can give them fresh grass clippings and catch bugs for them that the mower stirs up-beetles,grasshoppers etc. I give them dead bugs from the pool and in the skimmer.I have also visited the bait store to get them worms and crickets. They go crazy over them!! Shoveling up leaves from under our bushes is good so they can forage under the leaves for bugs and worms.We are having to keep them penned until they feather out due to a hawk taking five of them so I am trying to make their dining experience enjoyable while they are temporarily cooped up. Carol Oh my yes....I had forgotten about those egrets until you mentioned it. It was horrible and right across the street from an elementary school. Really was quite unbelievable that there could be so many of the nasty things. So no, the grackles are not as bad as that. But there are more of them in my area than any time before. I truly dislike them. Randy If I didn't live where I do I might be tempted to use like methods of grackle control but would likely end up in jail....haha. However they don't roost on my property they just visit and fly through all time. I really don't know where they are roosting. But don't have large enough trees on our property. I need to post another tread about the potential problem we do have here in our neighborhood and even worse than birds. COYOTES! Believe it or not my across the street neighbor saw two of them right up on her patio looking in the door recently. And her husband has seen the pair two different times with the neighbor's cat cornered! Now this is really crazy living where we live! G.M.

Absolutely Lesser Goldfinch. By the way, I don't know how much time you spent looking at warbler pics, but you would have saved yourself that effort by noting the bill shape: warblers have much thinner bills. Bill shape and size is often a good clue to point you in the right direction; bright colour patterns you'll likely remember without trying, but the bill really needs to be looked at (unless we're talking about a toucan or spoonbill etc). Just a friendly hint. -O-

It could be but I'm not positive. I'll have to show this to my Mom. I kept describing him as having "orange armpits", so this pic would match in that respect. But the bird in your pic looks more sleek and less chubby than the bird in my yard. He had that well-rounded chickadee belly. Do you know of any other small black, orange and white birds that might be in my area? I see that you're in KY!
