Warbler?

I grabbed the camera to verify this, but the picture quality is not the best. Was looking out the kitchen windows at the feeders and logging on our bird list for the day, when I thought I spied a goldfinch. Took a second look at it, and it wasn't. It was smaller than a goldfinch, more rounded body. Black beak and wasn't conical. Just the slightest suggestion of a yellow tinge in the throat. At first I was thinking female ruby crowned kinglet, because I have seen a male here........but it just didn't quite look like one either. I am not good at warbler identification, but it sure looks like a female pine warbler to me. We are out of range for them in SE Ohio, but they are sometimes seen here as per bird book. Any suggestions? Five inch snow cover on ground here.

I hope you do give your chance Encounter seeding another chance :) Maybe it will be better in more sun. Of course, the color may not be so pretty, but who knows. I am the one who has such a hard time getting rid of seedlings though. I've been going through mine, have several reds, various shades & sizes, & am having such a hard time whittling them down.

Well, this is a mystery! I don't know anything about the birds in England, but after looking online for quite awhile, I couldn't find anything that looked like the one in your picture. The closest I could find with that white band across it's lower back, was a young house martin. Sometimes young birds look different from what they grow into. Could you send the picture to some place that knows all about birds? Sorry I couldn't help you. And sorry this beautiful bird died. I had a beautiful small warbler hit my window and die. :( Please report back here if you ever find out what your bird was. Good luck!

Those black and white wing bars are none other than American Goldfinch. Nonbreeding female, I'd say. Plus, Pine Warblers have such a distinct eyering and they appear rather "neck-less". I know you felt it was small for a Goldfinch (although Pine Warblers are comparable in size to a Goldfinch) but all of the field marks are Goldfinch. You mentioned Kinglet, which are small, but you rightly ruled that out.

Thank you for your responses. Have you ever looked at a word for so long, a common word, and the more you look at it, the less you are sure if it's spelt right? That's what happened with the bird. LOL. Of course it's a goldfinch, and I methodically talked myself out of it. I'm laughing, because I once did that with an ornithologist to whom I sent an image of a female red winged black bird and pulled a blank on, yet one I have seen enough to know better. The goldfinch showed up with another one who had yellowed up well, and I could see that they were identical in size, markings and all other respects. Thanks for being so polite with such a dufus question.
