Why do the ducks migrate away from the North in the winter?

Ducks have been raiding my ground feeders lately. It's like they monitor my house. I can't see or hear them, but when I put out some food, they sometimes magically appear within minutes and clear out the feeder. Sometimes, this attracts the coyotes in the area and they end up chasing the ducks, but the ducks are too fast and the coyote then eat the corn in the feeder, too. The also fly away when a hawk is nearby, though the ducks are often much larger than the hawk.

In the summer, there were a few of ducks, so I didn't mind that they raid the feeder, but now they appear as a large mob. I thought black birds were bad :-).

The weather is starting to get cold and it's getting close to icing. When are they migrating away?
