I have kept 3 large caterillars in a jar to watch them turn into butterflies. 2 of them are the same species which i think are cabbage whites.

this morning if found that they had both spun a web kind of thing that i suppose that they would use for a cocoon but instead there are dosens of baby caterpillars moving in it and out of it- and this is the same for BOTH caterpillars.

i thought that butterflies lay the eggs on a leaf and these hatch and the caterpillars just grow and turn into a butterfly. can someone tell me whats going on?
