Absolutely Lesser Goldfinch. By the way, I don't know how much time you spent looking at warbler pics, but you would have saved yourself that effort by noting the bill shape: warblers have much thinner bills. Bill shape and size is often a good clue to point you in the right direction; bright colour patterns you'll likely remember without trying, but the bill really needs to be looked at (unless we're talking about a toucan or spoonbill etc). I really don't think it's the Cardinals. I've heard pretty much all variations of their call, we've had nesting pairs for years. This "c'mere, c'mere, c'mere" is new, hubby has heard it too and is wondering what kind of bird this is. The Cardinals call mostly "pretty, pretty, pretty", "purdy, purdy, purdy", along with assorted chirps and trills.

There are websites to which you can upload these types of recordings. http://www.xeno-canto.org/ But, you'd have to register, etc, etc....

Thanks, Calliope, but I think it's bigger than a kingbird. I shot this with a 200mm lens. The cropped close up is less than 1/8 of the original photo. And you're right about the beak. Eagle Marsh has become a surprising pass through for migrating birds. I'm guessing that this one was on the way to somewhere else...
