please help w/ id

Hi! I saw this bird in my yard today and snapped a quick picture..sorry for the quality of the photo...hopefully it shows enough to help with identification. I haven't ever seen this kind of bird in my yard before and am quite curious as to what it is. I didn't get good look at the head but I believe it was all black, as well as the wings. There were white patches on the wings and the chest was white. The sides of the bird were a reddish-brown. I'm sure it's an easy id for someone, but I"m still new at id'ing.

I forgot to give my location...I am in South Central Pennsylvania. The bird was approximately the size of a robin, perhaps a little smaller. Is it an Eastern Towhee?

Rhizo, Thanks. From what I just read, it sounds like the mites are harmless so I won't worry about them and the galls. Any idea what the little green horns are in the 4th picture? Since I missed the dormant application this past winter, do you think a summer application would help to cut down the aphids and reduce the Sooty Mold that is just now starting up? Bonide also claims (via their support line) that the neem oil will help wash away the mold and acts as a natural fungicide. Anyone have any experience with these claims? Regarding the warning labels, I think the oil is the most toxic: Bonide Horticultural Oil RTU: Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing. Avoid breathing spray mist. In case of contact, wash immediately with soap and warm water. Wash hands, arms, and face thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling. Wash all contaminated clothing with soap and hot water before re-use. Boneem: RTU Hazards to humans and domestic animals CAUTION - Causes moderate eye and skin irritation. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Insecticidal Soap: No real warnings for humans

I got them from my uncle. I have about fourteen clumps now...and about 100 plants total. This all grew in the last year or two. They REALLY like their location. I am thinking about trading out or maybe even selling? some of them. If not them I'm going to have to figure out how to control them!!!

Did a search on Leaf-footed bug and found out they can be pest by eating some toms and other plants. Dispatched them into soapy water.

its not allegan fog.... but allegan fog is a SELECTION from one of the undulatas .... could the first one just be a hyper-fertilized undulata.. and i cant remember which ... when you get/move tall hosta.. try the taping method ... the tape will hold up the leaves until the roots start pumping water.. in a week or 2 the tape will fall off or can be removed ... here's a picture: i don't know what the other one is.. ken

You can also ID by call.....they say Toe HEEEEEEE! Usually hopping & scratching under trees. I beieve "mine" here in W. Michigan have left. I was luckey enough to spot 2 babies this fall!

I get the western Tohee that is spotted only after the snow starts falling. And they leave in late winter or very early spring. They do a noticeble kick start when they scratch. And eat mostly on the ground but do eat on the stumps also.
