My friends and family think I'm insane...

I've never had woodpeckers coming to my feeders, and I've been watching for months and months. Today I looked out the window and noticed a black and white bird....I took a closer look and saw the red cap on it's head!! I ran and got my camera because I knew it wouldn't stick around for long and I wanted to be able to identify what I had seen. When I downloaded my picture I was so ridiculously thrilled to discover that I had not just one, but two woodpeckers at the feeders!! As best as I could tell, one was a downy and the other was a red-bellied. I was so excited I immediately called my mother, my husband, and my best friend to tell them. They weren't as thrilled as I was. They just don't get it, but I know you all will understand!!

Congrats on your photo and noone here will ever question why you are so excited. We've all been there!

I am new to backyard birding and I totally understand what you are saying. That's why this forum is so great, you can share your latest sighting and everyone is happy for you.

Don't worry about the neighbors, several years ago I put sockies on all of my peaches and it rained shortly thereafter making the sockies hang down. It wasn't long before I heard it, "your tree looks like it has condoms all over it". Well, from a distance the tree did look that way, didn't other me a bit. The peaches filled up the sockies in time.

Listen to me, Tisha, just stand by her the best you can---you do know only part of the story---and even if it is in response to outside factors, the pain to HER is still real. We know she did have Lyme's Disease from a tick bite she got in Ct. while delivering a horse----down here in the South----it had barely ever been heard of at that time---the aches and hurting joints all played their part in her suffering, though. Margie, after years of missing Mom so much, (They were celestial twins in the universe. They loved and fought each other more than anyone else on earth..) she began to rely more and more on painkillers---her husband would call and I would go over and try to help, but finally gave up----she was too much out of control and would go into screaming frenzies---we were never very close and that made it easier for me to just stay away from her. Margie's husband called early one morning to say she had died sometime in the early morning hours in a bathtub, with a syringe with partially dissolved painkiller medication in it. We went to St. Mary's Hosp. in Richmond to see her. I walked in the room with my family and and it was the FIRST time I'd seen peace on her face since our Mom died in 1984. Margie died July 27, 1997. I was relieved to see peace, not pain. She had a wisp of a smile on her face----the same sweet smile she had when she was a little girl.... I'm telling you this because you will always be plagued with questions. You will NEVER know the whole truth. It's her journey, Tisha and you can only help so much. Someday, you might not be able to help at all. What you CAN do is try your best to support her, even if it's a 'Thinking of You Card' in the mail--it's something positive for her to connect with....being remembered. Just let her know you still care about her. ---And you can pray for relief and support for her, and guidance and patience for you. One thing that has gotten me through some rough times is the uncanny way 'Lucky Pennies' would always show up when I needed a boost. I would be doing some dirty job, tired and worried----and suddenly, there would be a Lucky Penny, right in front of me, waiting. I always heard the words, 'I Am with you' in my heart, with each penny I picked up out of the dirt and grime. It helped immensely. It never hurts to say a little prayer. I send you warm support, prayers, and a great big hug to help you along, Tisha.

Good Morning, Everyone! Thank you all for the "welcome back". I missed each and every one of you. Stormy here today on this Good Friday. Dark and a bit chilly out. Good weather for gardens though. Glad for the rain though. We've had high temps and high, dry winds this past week and wildfires every day. Nothing close to here, but close enough that I could smell the smoke. My dogs erupted in chorus with every firetruck that passed by over on the highway.(hehehe). I took pictures of the gardens on the 31st. Glad I did, as the hot, dry winds dried out all the pretty yellow Jonquils later that day. Blasted hot winds ruined them before our Easter Sunday family picnic and egg hunt. They were magnificent in chorus with the yellow forsythias, white Bridle's Wreath, and Redbud trees now in full bloom all over the garden. My beloved Jane Magnolia is breathtakingly beautiful this year and smells so wonderful. I planted out some Orange Perfection Phlox yesterday. Tried them last year, but they didn't make it. This rain may ensure these do. I dug around in the bin at the store until I found one, just one package with moist peat inside. Holding it up to to sunlight, I could just make out something possibly alive in that dark green plastic bag. Makes me mad to pay five bucks for dead rootstock. They are not the best looking root stocks I ever saw, but think they will make it. I only need one to survive to establish a nice clump this year for next year's blooms. I also planted a package of purple Liatris and a package of Freesia bulbs for summer blooms. I love the smell of Freesia. Yummy. All the Peonies are up and beginning to make tiny flower buds. Hopefully the red ones and deep magenta ones will bloom this year too. If they do, it will be their first time. Some deer came into the yard this winter and ate the top branches off the one surviving River birch sapling, but it is recovering nicely now. I caged it with a tomato cage and for now they are leaving it alone. They are "camped" up on the hill, hiding in wait for my juicy, delicious roses to start blooming, no doubt. :[ I've been taking the dogs for walks up there every morning and hopefully their pee and poop will make them think twice about coming any closer to the back yard. My English Shepherd could easily take down a whitetail deer. DH said this weekend he would finish stretching field fence around on the inside of the existing barbed wire fencing to keep out critters. That won't keep deer out, but it will keep our dogs in, so we can let them run loose on the property. That will be great. They need the exercise and I need them to do their job protecting the place. They love it, too. Hopefully the raccoons & coyotes will take the hint. Keep Out! Anyhow, so far so good. Gotta go check on my chicks. They poopy up their water really fast and will be ready for breakfast. :) Talk to you guys later. ~Annie

I don't count the plants, but I can tell you the size of the blocks I plant. For 6 people, I find that two or three 3'x8' blocks of bush beans -- each a different variety -- planted at a 4-6" spacing will provide 1-2 meals per week for the 4-6 week harvest period with enough for raw snacking by the handful and, perhaps, a little left over at the height of harvest for freezing. About 20 feet of State Half-Runners planted in a wide row on each side of a 2ft fence (5-6 total rows with beans spaced at 4 inches and rows at 6 inches), provided about two cooked meals per week and plenty of raw snacking with a bit left over to freeze again through its harvest period. I don't know how long that would have continued because it was cut short by frost. I'm not too familiar with regular pole beans, but 10 feet of yardlong beans last year gave us a month of meals 1-2 times/week and 2 gallon freezer bags. Yields will vary depending on variety and conditions and number of meals will vary based on how much you like beans and how many vanish after picking as raw snacks.

Welcome to the world of birds. My family flipped when I had my sister come over to fill our feeders while we were on vacation. It was like dog sitting -- well, almost.

Everyone thought we must have a house bird of some sort to have my sister come over to feed it. When in fact, it was my orioles and finches.

You can also go on Twitter.com to chat with birders who live near you and/or sign up with birding trips. Do a search on twitter for birds, birders, etc., then "follow" them and/or birding groups

I used to have the red-bellied and the downy at my peanut butter feeder when I lived in Georgia. The feeder had a cage around it to keep the squirrels out. Of course the small birds could go right through the mesh and the red-bellied has such a long beak he could reach the peanut butter through the mesh. I think he also helped keep the starlings away, they steered clear of that beak!

Nice to see you getting woodpeckers. The last two days I've been treated to my first red-bellied woodpecker since last winter.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm happy to say that the woodpeckers are now regular visitors to my feeders. There is a male and female Downy and a female Red-bellied. So far I have not seen a male Red-bellied, but I'm watching and hoping! I'm using a peanut butter suet, which the Downy seems to favor and a big block of the Birdola Woodpecker food, which is the favorite of the Red-bellied. None of the woodpeckers seem interested in the BOSS or shelled peanuts that I have in other feeders. We live right next to woods which have a lot of dead trees, and I have intentionally left a mixed clump of live and dead trees/bushes in my side yard.

I'd really love to attract Pileated as well as Red-headed woodpeckers.

What else can I do to make my yard woodpecker friendly?

"Insanity doesn't run in the family, it gallops!" from Arsenic & Old Lace, I think. The rest of my family are not birders BUT they all know local, backyard birds both by sight & ear just because they hear me blather on about them constantly. Just yesterday my sister-in-law described a "male pattern bald" hawk. She said it was the size of a Red-tail but didn't have a red tail, head was mostly white with dark streaks across the ears. I immediately thought of an Osprey but didn't think she'd see one in my yard. She was at a lake when she saw it. I showed her a pic in a field guide & she said "That's it!" You have a great feeder set up, BTW. You are already ahead of me as I have yet to take a bird pic.

Just wanted 2 let u know u r in good company. We r ALL insane/nuts/whacked over our birds!!! U should have seen me when a pileated WP landed on my deck. LOL, I should have called the ppl in white coats on myself :)

i have had a melenistic northern flicker here last two days
i have got a couple shots of him in shadow but yet to catch him in the sunlight, He is dark charcoal grey with male red marking on head but little light speckling or not noticable lighter underbelly. My relatives say quit taking pictures in the dark! But i hope he stays around enough to get a good photo closeup.
