Goldfinch / disease?

A goldfinch came to our deck to die this afternoon/evening. It was lethargic, though at first flew to close branches and then back a couple of times. It did not react to my husband's presence and in fact he was able to pick it up.

He attempted to give the bird thistle and water, but it seemed unable to get it down and spit it out. He did not see evience of eye disease (as in house finch disease).

Finally, after sitting quietly on the deck rail for about a half hour and not moving much (though occasionally ruffling it's feathers) the bird died and DH buried it.

As a precaution, we will clean and bleach the feeders.

I read about raking under the feeders--they are hanging off our deck rail about 11 feet off the ground. Is raking an issue in this situation?

Should we rinse off the area of the deck near the feeders with bleach solution?
