First warbler ever.

This afternoon I saw my first warbler ever. It was a female yellow warbler, so at first I had to make sure it wasn't one of my goldfinches. My Iowa bird book says they should all be gone south by now, but I was luck enough to get a late migrator. We get several warblers in Iowa, but they must prefer more rural areas.

This has been a good year as I've seen several new birds.

Congrats. Warblers can be hard to tell apart, especially the females so you're doing well to ID.

Congratulations! I too had my first one this year. Well actually I've seen several, but always got so frustrated trying to ID them I never took the time to follow up on them. I'm trying to change that. Hopefully you'll see many more warblers! :)

Welcome, and congratulations! Listen, not EVERY rose requires dis budding to mature. Some are perfectly vigorous enough to flower and still grow. However, some definitely are NOT. Many own root Teas, Climbing Teas and particularly yellow Tea-Noisettes and some Chinas can take forever to develop and mature into the plants you expect them to be. Permitting them to flower only slows their development. Weak, stingy growers such as Austin's Dove; many of the earlier gray, brown and green roses; many of the Tea-like earlier HTs can also drag their feet, producing begrudging inches of growth. Permitting them to flower will slow them down greatly, too. Then, you have some more modern climbers, such as Kordes' Rosarium Uetersen, Renae and my Annie Laurie McDowell which will sit and flower like a blooming weed while refusing to climb. If you want to push these to climb, you pinch off the buds, forcing that energy into pushing elongated canes from the plants in their efforts to bloom again. Budding these particular types will speed up their development quite a bit, but they still benefit from dis budding to push growth. Own root versions of them are significantly slower to develop. It's with these that dis budding provides the greatest benefit. It is quite possible your roses won't require dis budding to develop into the plants you desire, in the time frame you have in mind. Whether they will or not, they very likely will mature into what you hope for faster if you don't let them flower. Whether you permit flowering as they desire; permit only some of the flowers to mature and open or simply continue dis budding them until they are the size you want them to be is up to you. Enjoy whatever flowers you want to, but keep in mind that if they are taking longer than you hoped to develop into the plants you expected or desired, removing the flowers to force growth should help you get what you want, closer to when you want it. chuckurso1, If I go 2 ft. down I would need a back hoe, which I don't have, and I would just create a slow draining pond. The way I combat shallow soil is to try to amend the soil and making it deeper. I like to build a berm on the low side of my garden with some type of organic matter. The berm helps with erosion, and as it decays I toss it on the garden and build another berm with whatever organic matter I have access to. Here is the berm on the south end of my south garden. The sweet potatoes are growing over the berm. This year my berm is wood chips, last year it was hay. You can see that Johnson grass has pretty well taken over my sweet potatoes because of the Jonson grass seed in last years berm being tilled into the soil. We have had a lot of hot days this summer and I have had trouble getting the fall garden started, so I tried starting greens in the shade in my north garden. The germination was much better, but I expect the growth to be slower, but that will work till I can get later plantings to catch up. This is my newest garden, it was started this year. Above the garden you can see my supply of scrap hay, I plan on using for berms or mulch. The hay is a little rough for mulch, but I will use it if I cant find anything better. Across the highway you can see my wildlife garden area, I have 6 small gardens over there, all are larger than this one. I have had health issues this year an the place looks a little "scrappy", but with the weather cooling off I will start getting things cleaned up.

Some first blooms ever--and other first blooms of the season

Here's a fairly large Double Knock Out in the front yard--in the divider between my property and the neighbor's. Haven't had time to anything with it yet this year, so its looking a bit wild and woolley--and maybe lop-sided. I'll try to get some pruning done before the season is over. : ) Light blue irises came with the property when I bought my house thirty something years ago--don't know their name, but they bloom forever (for an iris). Another iris--name unknown. Sure is lovely. Here's a terrific fully packed white peony called Festiva Maxima--love that blood-red like marking in the middle of the blooms. I read somewhere once that this old classic is a good choice for more southerly gardeners, but I don't remember why. I have 4 of them. BIG blooms. Its getting so exciting now that things are nearly ready to bloom--can't believe the buds all over the yard--have never seen so many. Oddly, however, my hybrid teas are not taking over the show like they usually do. I thought with the mild winter we had, they would do terrifically well, but it seems the shrubs and floribundas are the ones doing best. But maybe that will all change in the next few weeks. This is about 3 weeks early for my roses--any of them--to be blooming. Kate

Iowa gets a lot of warblers between breeders and migrants. I lived there when I first started birding, and though I moved to Tucson a couple of years later, I still managed to compile a pretty decent warbler list there. You might be surprised at what you can find if you hit some wooded areas during spring and fall.

Congrats on the new bird (now you need to find a pretty male Yellow).

Oh no! Confusing Fall Warblers! Next it will be LBJs-Little Brown Jobs (sparrows), Then if you are at a beach-peeps-the various sandpipers, gulls in all 3 or 4 years of plumage. Pretty soon you're leading bird walks! It's a slippery slope but lot's of fun. People start coming to you and saying "I saw this bird..."

I remember when I first became "a bird expert."
I'd attended the beginning birder weekends at Jenny Wiley State Park in Prestonsburg, KY, a few years, trying to get in the birding groups with the most experienced leaders so I could learn as much as possible. One year my daughter and I grabbed a seat in one of the boats early to make sure we didn't miss the lake birding outing. When the boats were nearly full, someone asked about our boat's birding leader. The organizer glanced into our boat, pointed at me and said, "You already have one." The next thing I knew, I was a "birding expert," pointing out Common Yellowthroats, Belted Kingfishers, etc...there's always someone more experienced or less experienced that you are, in ANYthing!

I think I've seen a couple yellow warblers in the yard the last few days, and just this evening I saw a different kind of warbler with a gray head. I wish I had gotten a better look at it. The only option, according to my Iowa birds book, is a female american redstart, but I'm not sure that's it. I hope it comes back tomorrow.

I've now seen the new warbler several times and I'm quite sure it is a nashville warbler. Iowa is not in its range on the maps, but they must migrate through here as they head south from Canada to Mexico.

When I initially saw the yellow warblers I assumed they'd be gone south quickly and I was lucky just to get a quick glimpse, but they have been here for two weeks searching for insects on tree and plant leaves.

I just read your first post again and noticed your mention of rural areas. There was a park I used to bird alot in DesMoines, Ft DesMoines park, across the street from Southridge Mall (so not terribly rural). I don't have lists in front of me but off the top of my head I remember seeing Blackpoll, Blackburnian, Magnolia, Black and White, and Palm warblers there. So you don't necessarily have to go too far afield.
