What bird I heard?

I was awakened this a.m. about 5:30, still dark out, by a bird. I'm assuming it was an owl, but I listened at the cornell site and didn't hear what I heard. (I'm in CT.)

The quality of the sound was exactly like a child on a slide whistle, but without any slide...like the sound they make when they are bored with the thing and just blow on it.

The thing is, it was so random. It wasn't like a bird call that is consistent in rhythm or tone. It was a toot at one pitch, then a longer toot at a little lower pitch. Then maybe a short one at that pitch and so on. Like the bird missed a few lessons in bird call 101. And it was fairly loud as it woke me up, even with my windows shut.

The closest I heard on line was the Northern Saw-whet, but it wasn't right. Any ideas?
