what he said.. but more ... depends where they are sent from .. and whether they are still FULLY dormant ... whaas held over tons of conifers last winter.. i am sure he can add much to the conversation.. maybe even some pics ... if you can take delivery.. in FULL DORMANCY ... and hold them in full dormancy ... see the key words there ... then the trees can be planted at ground thaw .. PRESUMING you have well draining soil ... and in this case.. trees/conifers/shrubs are all the same ... and this might mean.. taking delivery from a southern provider ... in FEB or march!!! .... or better yet .... delaying delivery of such until fall planting time... just because you want it.. and found it.. doesnt mean you can have it ... or plant it the problem in my z5 ... is trees should be planted.. as i told you elsewhere.. 6 to 8 weeks before the heat of summer ... my problem is the the heat of summer can be 2 weeks after last frost potential around 6/1 ... and on a fully leafed out.. growing tree.. transplanting and a few weeks later the temps hitting 80.. is not good and like the other post.. potting up.. and holding until fall might be best ... in this case.. TIMING IS EVERYTHING!!!! KEN ps: i thought there was more.. but i got distracted ... and lost my train of thought.. will mull it over.. and add more.. when the coffee wears off after grocery shopping.. i am positive.. i will have a bazillion more thoughts.. while driving.. and not a coherent thought.. when i get back to the computer ... pps: part of this involves the seller sending them to you at what THEY CALL .. planting time ... do NOT defer to them .. my odds of success went up significantly when i realized this ... they shoot for a catchall planting time.. which may or may not.. be best.. you have to ask them when their stock comes out of dormancy.. and insist on delivery a few weeks prior.. to INSURE FULL DORMANCY .... and most sellers will appreciate your knowledge .. and extend the warranty ... [as compared to calling in august and demanding immediate delivery.. they might say sure.. no warranty] ...

patti43, you are correct that the main intent of the G20 summit is to discuss what steps should be taken to avert further financial crisis in the global economy. In a nutshell, many of the protesters are against having G20 summits at all, saying that they don't feel the G20 leaders have any right to make decisions that impact the rest of the world. Some protesters use the summit in hopes that their messages on a variety of issues including the economy, climate change, and globalization will capture the attention of world leaders attending the summit. Some protest that they don't want the G20 countries to cut stimulus spending until jobs recover. Greenpeace International is protesting that if G20 countries could spend billions of dollars to rescue banks in trouble, why not find money to help unemployed workers, for the environment and for social causes. Student activists are protesing being tens of thousands in debt for their education. They had signs that said "One billion for education, not fortification", inferring that the 1 billion spend on security and fortification to hold the summit would have been better spent on providing less costly education. There are people protesting for the Labor movement, the Environmental movement, the Women's movement, etc. Marchers have been complaining about everything from pay for public employees to expensive housing to the excesses of capitalism. It's unfortunate the minority who use violent means to show their displeasure make it so much more difficult for those who wish to peacefully exercise their right to protest.

As was said above, you can lift onions at any time, but for storage you should wait until the necks are soft or later. Re bolting, onions form a bulb in their first year, and then bolt to seed in their second year. If your transplants are exposed to a cold snap, it may trick them into "thinking" they are in their second year and then bolt. Back in 2008 had about half of my onions bolt and wrote to my supplier Dixondale Farm. Here is their reply: Onions and other commercially cultivated alliums are biennial plants, which means that it usually takes them two growing seasons to go from seed to seed. The first season is when we take it from a seed to a transplant. When you plant the plant, it begins its second season. Given a certain set of environmental conditions, onions can be tricked into believing they have gone through two growing cycles during their first year. Instead of finishing with a well-cured bulb, ready for the market, a seed stalk can develop prematurely, causing onions to be unmarketable. While it is impossible to control the weather, planting at the correct time for the variety in question is the most important factor to limit premature bolting. Over-fertilizing can also contribute to bolting - if onions are too vigorous, too early in their development, bolting can result. Onions bolt as a reaction to cold weather stress. Temperatures under 45F may cause the onion to bolt when the plant has five or more leaves. Some onions are more or less susceptible to bolting than others and the process is not completely understood. Unfortunately once the onion does bolt, the quality of the onion bulb deteriorates rapidly and it should be harvested and eaten as quickly as possible.

Thank you so much for your kind words, and I knew Daisy has recently lost a beloved cat, very untimely, and I sympathize with her loss, too. It is so shocking, when the animal is young. We have had seven cats, and had vowed never to have another one when, it seems like just yesterday, this one came into our lives -- through the window -- and jumped in our daughter's lap. We were continually astonished at how lucky we were to have this particular cat. She had been brought up by two little Mexican boys next door, though she lived in the garden. They said their mother didn't want to spend money to buy cat food, but, "You can look after her if you like. We won't mind." Losing her was an unpropitious start to a gloomy summer -- with its awful heat torrential rains. But life goes on. I had no idea they had chiggers in Italy. I know they have them here, though thankfully not in Brooklyn. They used to be only when you sat on the grass in early spring. But now they seem to be a torment all year. They say that socks impregnated in permethrin are an effective repellent. Also hot showers and long swims help to get rid of them.
