I suspect that you are talking about tent caterpillars, though it may be the fall webworm. A description would help. Catalpa worms (also caterpillars) are an entirely different species, as are gypsy moths. Sod webworms are not the same caterpillars, either. Tent caterpillars or forest webworms are not a problem for your lawn. You may see them on the grass, but they usually only leave the trees in search of a place to pupate or to find a new food source (in a tree). It's a good policy to disturb the webs with a broom or strong spray of water so that birds and other predators can easily get to those caterpillars.

voodoobrew, I've tried liquidy bad fruit a few more times for my butterfly population on perfect weather days, and still just ants for me, too, while the butterflies went about their time at the flowers oblivious to my offering. I should keep trying, though, especially now that the hummingbirds are here too and might be interested.

For the time being, I have not refilled the feeder. I am waiting for the concrete to dry. My contractor found a partially dug out burrow along the back of the house. We have paved over the whole back of the house to 3 feet out. It will be useful to put the composter on, plus any stray garden items which will not provide any habitat for rodents. And I'd like to see any vermin dig a burrow under the concrete out that far. If this is not sufficient. I can put some left over pavers under the bird feeder or something.
