Paz, if you're east of the MS River it's a rose-breasted grosbeak ... check the beigey coloring on the breast... If the bird is really dark brown and beige predominantly, it's a female. If on the breast, you see faint rose color coming through (maybe even in the classic Vee by now... some of ours are starting to show the def. demarcation lines of the vee) then it's this year's young male. If you can catch "them" flying in or out of the feeder/trees, you might catch the gorgeous rose coloring in the "wingpits". They're getting ready to head south... not many male sightings even down here now. Mostly the girls and young who hang on into September before heading out completely.

I'm just east of the Mississippi but way north, Minnesota. I was hoping it might be a grosbeak but it was mostly brown and I expected more color.. I think it probably a female. Thanks for the response.

Hi pazfam, I am in MN too, about an hour north of the Twin Cities.

Your pic is tiny, but I am 99.9% sure you have a female Rose Breasted Grosbeak there. We still have dozens of them at our feeders here, daily.

Linda

Thanks Linda. Yeah, I've seen many females at the feeder lately as well. I've seen no mailes however, have you?
