Newbie as well

Hi,

I'm Completely new to camping (Although I went for a few caravan holidays as a kid) - although I'm not new to travelling - having been to around 40 countries from South America, North America, Africa, all around Europe, the far east etc.

Recently though, I've been considering the idea of basically travelling the world camping, but since I have no experience whatsoever - I thought it might be an idea to initially start with a 2 week break around the UK, then move to a 3 month break in Europe before finally getting involved with a tour that might take a few years - I've got experience of being away as I lived in Greece for around a year when I was younger (Around 13 years ago)

Basically, for such a trip - I would need to know what kind of kit to bring (I've been reading the suggestions elsewhere in the forum which seem useful - but I'm not really sure what some of the terms refer to..) Also a must for me would be a laptop - preferrably with connections to the Internet - and I'd probably bring some DVDs and stuff - although with my Sony HD-3 music wouldn't be a problem - how do electic connections work for tents on a campsite?

I presume I'd need a bedroll, tent, backpack, stove and the other stuff mentioned - but are boots really that important - usually I'd just wear trainers (Sneakers) as I can't see myself doing much mountain climbing and the like - usually I think I'd be travelling along well used trails or roads - so I'm not sure boots are a must?

I'm a bit cloudy on what kind of clothes to bring - given the climates are likely to go from very cold (-20 ish) to very warm (40+ ish)

What kind of weight is reasonable to carry around for an extended period? I'm around 5' 11" and fairly strong - so probably can carry a bit more than an average person

I'd be interested in bringing my binoculars and astronomy stuff - what tips and hints could be provided for the safe carrying / storage of these delicate items?

Also - what is a reasonable distance to start walking per day and what could you bring it up to? And what is an 'average' speed (For working out travel times / distances)

Should I consider map books and compass or would a GPS system be better?

How safe is water to drink and what issues crop up with keeping stuff safe/sterile/clean

Would you pitch a tent, leave it then come back - or everytime you leave the site - would you pack it up and bring it with you? This would obviously restrict distances you could travel and so on

If you had to list 10 items you need - past the obvious - what would they be?

What items would you absoluetely leave behind?

What kind of solar items are available and are they any good?

What issues have people had with personal and equipment safety in travel around the world and what would the top tips be?

As I said, I have no experience in this - so any help would be great!

Cheers

Andy
