what is this bird

I only see it around this time of year. It has a red spot at the back of it's head and a very long beak.

they spend a lot of time on the ground looking for ants and bugs. definatly yellow shafted flicker when they fly you can see the yellow feathers under the wings and tail area when it get snowy or cold they spend more time at the feeders especially suet or woodpecker blocks. make a woodpecker log from a piece of dead branch or limb and drill holes in it stuff with peanut butter or suet and hang in from a tree branch or shepards hook and they will hang on it to eat.

They are nature's garbage men! I live near a park with mature trees that is sandwiched at the intersection of two busy roads. The turkey vultures settle in on a garage roof across from the park a block from the intersection and just have a buffet! They are magnificent.

Probably not. Herons can eat some prey that would appear to be too large, and I've seen other heron species catch prey and try to swallow them even though they actually were too large.
