I haven`t heard it since. The mellow tones it made were similar to a middle "C" started note. Kinda sounded like it was played on a flute. Does a mockingbird sing at night? I haven`t heard any do that and we have a bunch here in the neighborhood. After the sun goes down, it gets completely quiet here as far as ANY bird singing, unless it is a hoot owl...and that is rare when I hear them. It was also loud and far off ( 200 yards or so ) I am guessing it must have been a large bird making the sounds. I heard it well from where I was at. I will check out your link about night birds. I really appreciate the help! :) This one has me tweaked. Thank you! :)

Patrick, Can you please tell me what you talking about? I think Barb elaborated on what I said with the exception of clarifying what people are talking about when they refer to bird flu. If you could please clarify what you found to be so erroneous, I'll be happy to post a retraction. In my town, we have been asked not to touch any dead birds and to report dead birds to the board of health. If you give me your address, I'll be happy to send you a copy of the flyer. If you have some information on the topic of the thread, it would be nice if you would post it rather than being rude. I think there is a polite way to critique people. Unlike websites that are created and appear to have factual information on them, this is a forum. People expect debate on issues like this. It provides the opportunity for people to ask questions and learn. There is also an opportunity for people to come here and post corrections as Barb so politely did. I have a suggestion for you. The next time you find yourself losing patience and tempted to post something that serves no purpose but to be mean, just close your browser. It is much less work than posting something nasty.

Okay...getting back to the original poster. Millymoo, I didn't sit down and think really hard about the sound you described (so forgive me if I overlook something simple), but what I do when I do not know a bird call is I use the Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds website. I can typically narrow down the approximate type of bird that I am hearing and I just begin navigating the website. Perhaps begin with Northern Cardinal (they do make many different types of calls/songs but their vocal style and clarity remains the same). I can say that the N. Cardinal does vocalize a crisp, loud, clear "birdie, birdie, birdie" song that is quite common. Could be what you heard. Try looking up the sound of a titmouse and a Carolina wren. They have various songs, and be sure to listen to them all. (All about birds has good audio stuff). I don't think you'd find either of those birds at your feeder, but they might be close by.
