The well advertised places seem to be ok. But, when on a trip, we'd look for the nice looking campgrounds, off the highways. We'd check in our Triple A Camping booklets, and mostly always found good nice places to stay
Several Pennsylvania State Parks were NOT well maintained Kids had the run of the place, destroyed the wash-rooms, rode bikes thru the flower beds, forced folks off the walkways!
most places we found in the camp books were ok, but did drive 15 miles to find one place closed.
The privately owned camp-grounds were the best.

I live in the Northwest where we have some gorgeous, well-taken-care-of campgrounds. My favorite place to camp is on the coast, with a little bit of wind protection like dunes or a line of thicker trees) and easy access to the beach. I love the smell, and fresh air, and I love campfires. I also think it's more fun to make meals of fresh seafood when at the beach. I like camping on the mountains too, as long as there aren't too many mosquitos, and my favorite campsites have a lake or river or babbling creek.

I'd love to camp on the other side of the range of mountains - where it's high desert - and right up near one of the wild rivers (e.g. Deschutes River in Maupin, Oregon, where the whole place smells like sage) because then you have warm and dry with coolness from river and it's incredibly serene...EXCEPT that they don't allow campfires half the time because it's so dry, which sorta defeats the purpose for me!

Very beautiful! NaCl as fine art. I LOVE that cook book title! I'd love to call a bookstore and ask for it, he he! We definitely need a report on that pan. Cleaning the range after frying is a PITA (as opposed to P&S--which could stand for Pain and Suffering, which I would be in without a Point & Shoot). Great job Cathy!

Do you have a camping trip in the autumn

we did not camp Grand Teton NP in the fall, but did volunteer there for the entire season in 2011. We worked at the visitors center at Flagg Ranch, and lived in our camper at Coulter Bay. That has to be our favorite "camping" trip ever. Let me make one comment about your photo of Mt. Moran. The pegmatite and limestone cap are to the right of the "skillet" in your photo...I believe your photo is inverted. The Pegmatyte (the dark nearly verticle stripe) that runs up to the top of the peak is a different kind of rock that filled a crack in the base rock while the mountain was still far below the surface, and the darker rock was molten. The tiny white line that touches the Pegmatyte at the top on the left is limestone that was above the rock of the mountain before it was lifted above the ground, and has not yet abraded away. The skillet is a patch of snow that usually does not melt in summer. I called it a guitar, because skillets are round, and its not. The rangers did not like me to do that, but I took a "volunteers privilege" and did it anyway.... Your photo brought back a summers worth of wnderful memories...Thank you. Bill

How do you cope with the things you don't like about where you live?

Nope, we were in a coastal town and within a 5 minute drive to the beach. Lots of ocean breeze, but still its hot all year round. Yes, Michigan has humidity and heat too, and yes it can be miserable to be in but it’s not in the 90’s or 100’s year round and we do reap benefits from that humidity like lots of rain (as opposed to droughts). Lawns are lush and healthy, plants and trees alike thrive here. It also never gets so hot that you can fry an egg on the hood of your car. Then there are the thunderstorms. When the humidity peaks, they come in for a quick shower to cool things down. Open the windows and that breeze with it’s smell of the rain is heaven. Say what you will Elmer, but as far as I’m concerned there is really no comparison. I’ll take Michigan’s summer of months of humidity along with it’s snow and ice in the winter over that dry relentless heat any day. I don’t miss it at all. LOL Forgot to add, I’m in one of those suburbs too, about 45 miles north of Detroit. When it comes to snow, it’s the perfect spot because we’re too low for the northern squalls and far enough north to miss the Ohio Valley Blizzards. We usually don’t get more than 6 inches at a time during the season. We live on a hill and the AWD on our SUV’s has no problem driving threw it, but the views are beautiful.

Where do you eat your meals and why do you like to eat there?

Sorry for the yellowed image, it's gloomy outside today, but this is the view from the eating area in our kitchen. Here is where we eat 95% of our meals during cool or super hot weather, if it's mild or warm, we eat out side at the table. Our dining room is for larger gatherings. I love it there too, but rarely would the two of us choose to eat there alone. I've cleaned up the table so that the bottles of vitamins, supplements and Kleenex box are on the island, normally they live at DH's place! The tv is on the counter, to the right of the table. DH hates it being on in the mornings because it disturbs his reading of the paper, however we are usually watching the news or Jeopardy during dinner. Rarely do we eat in the den. We just don't find it comfortable to hang over the low coffee table while sitting on the sofa. Although that said, DH takes a tray in there when I'm having a Mahjongg game at the kitchen table. DD moved to Georgia and has the above areas and a darling screened in porch. I think that would be the best of both worlds.

I am partial to Michigan camping, with my favorite being Ludington State Park on Lake Michigan. The park is enormous with sand dunes on Lake Michigan and a beautiful river with a dam where people fish, tube, canoe etc. The salmon come to spawn there in the fall and it is a great place to be at that time. Hamlin Lake is also in the park as well as Lost Lake, which is great for kayaking and fishing. The park has a lot of beauatiful nature trails with lots of wildlife to see. Since it is such a great park, it is also very popular and hard to get into. The actual campgrounds are usually crowded, but there are some great sites that we like to reserve.

Northern Rockies Alaska Hwy. Anywhere between Fort Nelson, BC and Watson Lake YK. We espeically like Stone Mountain Provincial Park. There are a lot of places to wilderness camp beside rivers and lakes up there and the wildlife is fabulous!

There are a lot of places and usually my favorite ones are where there's good fishing!

Here's a pic looking downriver from the last campsite along the Nantahala River (western NC) - Standing Indian C/G, Nantahala National Forest.

The weirdest dream I ever had about camping was when I dreamed about a werewolf coming in to the camp and then dragging me from my tent. It was actually really scary. On a happier note, the place that I like to go camping is Bear Lake. They have a beautiful camp ground where you can camp with either a tent or an RV. My favorite thing about Bear Lake is that you have the beach just off of the campground. We always go jetskiing and boating during the day. It is a lot of fun.

Depends on what you call camping, and where you are.

basic types to me:
1) RV camping, park in lot with other RV folks, generally drive to places, might day hike into a wilderness area, running water and power
2) car camping, big family size tent in campground
3) back packing, everything is carried by you, wherever you go
4) canoe or kayak camping, you portage your boat and gear on your back

I am from the Upper Mid-West and I generally do items 3 and 4. That said:

Backpacking that I have enjoyed
A) Porcupine Mountains in Western UP of Michigan
B) Isle Royale in Lake Superior
C) Beartooth Absaroka "Beaten Path" northeast of Yellowstone in Montana
D) Adirondacks High Peaks region near Mt Marcy
E) Sylvan Lake and Harney Peak area of Black Hills
F) Idaho side of Grand Tetons (Teton Creek)
G) Newport State Park, Door County Wisconsin
H) Devils Lake State Park northwest of Madison Wisconsin

Canoe Camping that I have enjoyed
A) Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota
B) Sylvania Wilderness of Northern Michigan near Watersmeet
C) Rock Island State Park, Wisconsin

Car camping
-Minnesota North Shore
-Lake Itasca Minnesota
-Door County Wisconsin State Parks
-Copper Falls State Park Wisconsin
