Cowles Bog is the last remaining remnant of the Great Marsh, Lake Michigan�s largest interdunal wetland. It is roughly 205 acres in extent - most of it wetlands that are in the process of being restored. The area that I'm arguing against is a 25 acre wooded parcel which, while is technically part of the "wetland complex," is separate. One of the issue facing the entire complex was that beginning long ago ditches were created to drain the wetland. Most of the damage occurred in the 1960s with the building of a steel mill and power plant. No one cared much about wetlands back then. Beginning in the 1850s, Indiana drained something like 87% of it's wetlands - second only to Illinois and Ohio. Now we have to live with that legacy - the mills, the power plant, the rail yard, the highway - all this is visually screened and sonically buffered by the forest. Cowles Bog is a beautiful place. We had thousands and thousands of Sand Hill Cranes fly over this spring. For the first time in recent memory, some of them stopped to roost in the bog. I'll do whatever I can do aid in its recovery, but I fear that removing all these trees--however imperfect they may be from an ecological standpoint--will jeopardize the entire complex. I think this is a case where environmentalism has to yield to good and common sense.

I have been googling and drinking coffee in AC wondering about beaches on the Great Lakes this morning . I don't really know this plant. I sit Inland down south on my computer.It does appear that this woman is trying to do her homework. There are more than one Sea Rocket. One C. edentula is native and One a. maritima is an invasive that is replacing the native. . They look a great deal alike. I think the issue is to be definite about which of the two it is. I think the woman who uprooted the plants has her heart in the right place and if it is the invasive one, she will be the person who is the early identifier for this beach habitat. Taking a herbarium specimen is appropriate if the cause is good. She is acting as a protector. She is the eyes on the ground, acting on her assumptions,. and has obviously has some skin in the game of this habitat and ownership of the process. By the way,all the Cakiles are edible. Young shoots are the best. I did get differing info on the annual/ perennial question. Seems like that might be a question of how cold that beach is come winter. The C. edentula is an invasive in Japan and Australia and other regions of the world. It is a rare threatened plant in Illinois. The beaches are mostly factories and city there.

I have a clip from a much older publication written by C.H. Robinson and detailing the Origin of the rose. Not quite the same as HMF, but close. And with a different picture. Email me and I'll send you a copy. This is a hoot, because the book in which the clipping was pasted arrived here last week, and this rose has been on my mind ever since. I hope it's not lost (as R. obtusiuscula, the Appalachian Rose, may be). Could you send me the reference for your book? I wonder how many American roses are lost? Or at least misplaced. I would mount the telly on an articulating arm underneath the upper cabinet closest to the dining table. Most likely you will need to attach it to a stud. Hopefully you could make the edge of the telly flush with the end of the cabinet/counter. Using an arm will allow you to pivot the telly toward the DR table, the island or the sink. And then you can fold it flat against the wall for a more streamline look when not in use. With this arrangement, you might have to move the radio/speakers.
