Some of the passie cuttings may root. I've taken several cuttings from one near me and have only had one root so fat. I use mostly perlite and keep it damp. Best to get one with the roots if you can. There are others here who know more about using the seeds. The local wildlife must eat the fruits because I never see a mature fruit on these vines.

The weather is great. I went to the Herb Market today and picked up a few interesting plants and some good ideas. Then I went over to the Farmer's Market and checked out the great food items. All in all a terrific day.

Shell ginger probably not a good choice for your zone, it is not very cold tolerant. I'm not sure if any of the gingers do well in zone 8, I have trouble with some of them here. You can check the ginger forum to see.

Butterfly ginger does well for me in North Texas ... freezes to the ground, but comes back each spring. It does take it awhile before it bloooms, however.

Shell ginger blooms on old growth. So if it died back you wouldn't get any blooms. Some of my hedychiums go dormant in winter but they are showing growth by Feb or March. Most survived Ike. The peacock gingers never showed till May or June and none survived Ike.

There is a plant called ginger lily at Lowe's right now. It is hardy in our zone. It reminds me more of a canna, but it does have nice foliage.

I think siamese ginger and hidden ginger are hardy in our zone (8b). We sell them at work and I brought some home to see. I'll know next spring.

Those passionflowers should root easily. I stuck 20 cuttings of my P. caerulea a couple months ago, in that horrible heat. No rooting hormone, no mist and no lightweight medium ~ just straight into some potting soil (rather heavy potting soil). Three of them took! I was very surprised as I didn't really think they'd do well after the timer mishap ~ yeah, they dried completely out a time or two, but still some rooted. But if you can get a rooted plant, Texasfern, it'd be well worth going to dig it up. It'll take off quicker once you get it planted.

Say, what color were the blooms? What did the fruit look like ~ color, size, shape (egg shaped, or completely oval without a large end like an egg?)? Any fragrance to the blooms? Can you post a pictures after you go back? If you do, get good pictures of multiple leaves if you would ~ they're different for different cultivars. I'd love to know what kind yours is ~ I'm always on the lookout for new hardy ones.

Texasfern, don't you live in San Antonio? If you do, I can bring you some passionvine( the purple one), from the coast the next time I go down . I will be going down the first weekend in November. Let me know. I might be able to bring you some shell ginger. I need to see how it is doing, I just got it last year at the plant swap. Barbra,

The blooms that were on the vine were purple and white. I have seen larger.
