I want to learn to bird by ear

Since I moved to a place that's next to a dell I hear lots of birds and I wish I knew their names. Does anyone have any suggestions for a dvd of bird sounds that would help me?

I'm a former city dweller out here in National Forest Land for 7 years now. I do much of my birding by ear since many of the birds are in the woods and I can't see them. I found www.whatbird.com to be very helpful, however the best thing you can do is to put in a small water feature. Could be as simple as 2 upside down garbage can lids one above the other with a waterfall run buy a small fishtank pump. Throw some rocks in there, plant a flat of Marigolds around it and VIOLA! Instant bird attraction! The birds will all eventualy visit your water site and you will be able to put the sound to the bird. I hear more birds than I see.

That's a wonderful idea to make a water feature. I love making things myself and saving a wad of green! I'm gonna go visit whatbird.com. Thanks Lisa!

I learned that I don't look good skinny! LOL 35#'s off and then 28#'s back on after one year! Radiation was interesting - large machine that rotated around and clunked and clunked. The techs were wonderful and every Friday I would bring treats: choc chip cookies, coffee cake, lemon bars or other goodies. Everyone in the clinic would show up and smile and give me lots and lots of hugs. I learned to visualize walking through my garden, moving plants, trimming here and there and before I knew it - treatment was over. My garden kept me company and gave me strength. My husband and son being there also made me strong. Two years - post surgery - doing just fine - and so is my garden. But....... I now want to fill every hour of health with projects, reading and helping others. To celebrate life and the end of treatment I had an art show of my new photographs at the University of Washington, Seattle. My old website has been re-designed - even with chemo brain - and will have two shows in Florida of my photos of plants mentioned in the Bible. I was accepted as a speaker at Seattle Garden and Flower Show in Feb. on my favorite subject - 'Biblical Plants for Northwest Gardens' Not depressed, just impatient that it sometimes takes me longer to do things but it can take several years to totally recover from all the poisons. Follow ups are scary - but a lot of things are scary and you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and find another project to focus on. Be well Marda and all the others fighting the big C, sps Here is a link that might be useful: Biblical Gardens Web Site

We had a bad problem downtown, but the city did something about it. Before that, I had 3 hanging around, always kind of spooked me out, but I wanted to get along with them, started feeding them along with the carnivore woodpeckers, dry cat food and meat scraps cut up and no bones to drop on a roof. That went on awhile, watched one eat a piece of apple one day, interesting birds. But then a sick one showed up on my front porch at the water dish I set out, and I found 2 dead in the gutter a half block down, laid there for 2 or more weeks weeks, ick. We have a problem with West Nile, they had already done their sampling, confirmed its presence in the area, so wouldn't come pick them up. I thought they were a health hazard and if it had been in front of my house, would have disposed of them. So West Nile took its toll on them, now we have a fair amount of owls, that may help keep them away. Haven't been bothered by them for a couple years now, same with the larger brown woodpeckers, large flock of them. So nature has its ways, but you don't want West Nile in your area if you don't have it already. People in the two-state area have died from it (mosquitoes the carrier), usually elderly or with compromised immune systems.

CORRECTION: The 'Have' list shows Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata'. It is a mistake; it should read Alocasia 'Hilo Beauty'. I do not have an Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata' to trade. Steve

How nice this thread got bumped! I enjoyed re-reading it and thinking about how much the yard has changed in a year. My bird-friendly yard is evolving. Have made great progress removing invasives, particularly Bittersweet, Buckthorn, and Norway Maples (treework cost me $2000 last year and there's still one GINORMOUS Norway maple left). There was a lot of brush created by all this tree/shrub work. Some was burned this Spring, right smack in the middle of the Oriental bittersweet patch, but the rest is in piles. The brush piles attract a lot of birds, particularly Sparrows, Cardinals, Juncos, and Wrens. The birds also love the back half-acre, which is wild and full of Crabapples, Choke Cherries, White Pine, and still some invasives like Honeysuckle and Autumn olive. Also making great progress on growing bird-friendly natives. Purchased another 50 native tree/shrub seedlings from the NH Nursery. That makes 130 total between this year and last - all of which ultimately make berries/nuts for the birds and wildlife. Most of them are in holding beds and haven't flowered yet, too little, but I've given away some and started to plant out a few. I winter-sowed many native species of perennials, annuals, and vines. Exactly where all this stuff is going, is not completely clear at this point, but I'm creating lasagne beds like crazy! The birds are always flitting around the yard and it's only going to get more interesting and fruitful for them (hopefully). It's great!

I was very lucky. There was a small 600 gal pond here with 2 small upper ponds for waterfalls when we moved in. I plan on being here for quite some time but if I ever move there WILL be a water feature for the birds even if it's just what I described to you! ENJOY! Let me know if you make one and how it's going!

There is a book that comes with a cd. You can get it at Borders etc. The author is Stan Tekiela and he does them by state. Birds of Michigan, Ohio or whatever.
Good Luck

I found a really good one called Birding by Ear, Peterson field guides. Very interesting. I can now tell the difference between the Northern Mockingbird, the brown thrasher and the gray catbird! You count the number of phrase repetitions. The mockingbird repeats 3 or more times, the thrasher one or two, and the catbird is a disjointed medley with usually one repetition. Cool, huh?
