Comments (32)Pocket gophers are called vermin for a reason: they are NOT harmless. Those who do not garden within the range of the Pocket Gopher need not worry themselves about the survival of these vermin. I personally supply them with 15 acres of prime habitat. They can leave three quarters of an acre to my garden. They ruin lawns, they eat roots of many plants, not just ornamentals, they chew and girdle trees and shrubs, they chew holes in irrigation pipe, their tunnel systems destabilize hillsides, dams and dikes, their burrows can lame or cause fatal injuries to horses, they destroy young trees planted for reforestation of areas destroyed by wildfire, and they harbor ticks that carry Lyme Disease. They have their place, as they process enormous quantities of soil when they tunnel and they feed raptors and predators. Too bad they don't tunnel in rocky soil. They show up after the soil has been improved. One of the serious problem they cause is secondary poisoning. Gardeners and farmers suffering losses from pocket gophers often turn to poisons that, if the dead gopher is ingested by domestic pets or wild raptors, cause death. The predation of my dogs on pocket gophers is a substitute for the predation of native predators excluded by my fencing. Long live the ratter....See MoreHelp, Air Plants killing my trees,
Comments (83)Without a doubt, they are killing the fruit bushes where I live. I went out and pulled at least a black garbage bag full yesterday and there are many more. Much of the bush that was alive last year, is not this year. You can pull some of them out but where the bush is still full, it is hard to get to all of them. Also, even though you are pulling them out, there are still little vines that you can't get to that are probably strangling them. One section about a foot long and maybe wo inches wide is completely dead now and that is where these air plants were very thick. Very sad....See MoreAre the newcomers killing birds at my feeder?
Comments (10)The cheapest way to get rid of a cat is to do something to make it remember your yard as a no-go zone. In other words, scare the crao out of it. I had this orange cat stalking around in my yard, trying to catch my birds. One day I looked out, saw the cat in the bushes between my deck and the lawn, so I grabbed an air horn, and slowly sneaked up behind it, and blasted the air horn right behind hit. I've never seen a cat jump so high in my life, and it ran, and ran, and ran, and I've never seen it again. I guess I traumatized it! Joe...See MoreOoops, killed my kid's birds trying to sell house!
Comments (56)Hello, I am Monica Sudds. I would like to respond to this string of messages. Quote: "Monica spoke with Lee Langsly in the medical issues department of SC Johnson Wax, the maker of Glade Air Products. He was quite helpful and showed concern. He also cautioned that there are warning labels about pets on some of their products." This statement is NOT my words. This part of this article is completely incorrect. Do Not use this information above as a quote from me. He never said anything at all about pet warnings on products! Yes he tried to absolve the company of wrongdoing. It was I who requested testing. Lee Langsly, not only, did not say there were proper warnings on the products, he said they would NOT PUT THEM on the products due to extensive costs and having to fight organizations like PETA for animal rights testing. I've always felt that warning should be on the products so that our companion animals, mostly of the avian species, were not put into jeopardy. But, it appeared at that time that the cost of warnings & changing labels was not worth a concern about their consumers pets. I did continue my "crusade" to save our parrots, small animals, elderly parents and infants. He threatened me with a lawsuit. I was ready, but obviously this did not happen. I told him if he could prove his product safe or put a warning label on then I would stop requesting it and warning people. I still have the original article that I wrote on this subject, that first appeared in newspapers, and parrot/bird organization newsletters and magazines around the US and overseas. It almost seems daily, more and more products that are dangerous to our birds, small pets, elderly family and small children are being produced. I say now. Find my original article on the internet. Do NOT believe that I thought at any time that the company was helpful or showed any concern. Do not read bastardized articles of what I originally wrote on this subject....See Morelen511
