Yes, that is the kind of thing that would bother me. I would say something for sure but probably not yelling. I'm raising my kids to be aware of environmental issues when camping but not everybody has been raised that way.

The biggest annoyance I have is noise. I don't mind happy kid noises or some good natured laughter around a fire. What I cannot stand is to go camping and be forced to listen to somebody else's music! I feel like if I wanted to listen to that music I would put it on myself! I think that is the rudest thing of all! Part of what I love about wilderness camping is that there is absolutely NOBODY near me for about a mile!

Avoid the parks and go into the National Forests. The restrictions are lifted on hunting and fishing, and you can have your own space with the same atmosphere as the National Parks.

When hiking in the desert, there is no way I can not make a zero impact. Any impact is noticeable. Still, I try my bestest to reduce that impact by sticking to a trail; (human or animal) and lots of other measures to reduce my impact. I almost always camp or hike, solo. No one in my household likes to go. They say my adventures are too hard and too far off the beaten path...

When I do have a person going with me, they are usually pretty good mannered. Still, some are very rough with their hiking. I avoid steppping on all cactus, don't harrass rattlesnakes, Never toss boulders off cliffs into canyons below. I have hiked with people who stomp over blooming cactus plants with their monster boots like they didn't see them at all or could care less. Kids love to roll huge boulders off of cliffs and wait for the awesome crash as it hits canyon bottom. They don't think about the cottonwood trees or anything below. Just the cool sound they wait for...crash! If I see rattlers, I usually take their pictures and leave. Some people want me to kill them. They can't believe I won't. They feel the snakes are a nuisance and could hurt someone or livstock.
Or, they harrass the snake til it is worked up into a fury.
Then, talk about it later when we get home.... usually inlaws who come on hikes with me...

I am not a spoilsport. I never yell at anyone for doing something. I just try to get them to move on. I like to have fun, too. Who wouldn't like to roll a huge boulder that takes three people to push, off a huge cliff and wait and count up to seven seconds til it thunders into something at the bottom of the canyon. Snakes are cool! Not something you see every day. My ranger friend says most Zion Natl Park snake bites are in the HAND. What does that tell you? most people are reaching out or messing with the snake. Bushwhacking is fun, too. But, in the desert, once you whack something, it is gone!

So, ranting and raving all done, I love going out with people and sharing some of the most amazing, colorful secret places. But, I don't like it when something gets
OVER-IMPACTED when I try so hard not to?

In past years I've had the misfortune to camp/fish/hunt with someone who (let's just say), did not share the same ideas and values I do about the great outdoors. From simply being next to helpless and lazy to having no respect for their fellow camper or the surrounding nature. On the other hand I've had some friends who were a pleasure to be with and always looked forward to our next trip together. Sometimes the only way you can really find out about a companion is to take a trip with them; and here I try to plan a short trip the first time, say for a week-end. But the bottom line is that I'd rather camp/fish alone (don't do the hunting anymore) than be with someone that does not share the same values as I do, or is otherwise a burden to be with.

I agree, Dale. Good Idea to take a "short" trip first with a new person to see if you are compatible. I'll have to remember that.

I usually hike alone because I am always wanting to make sure everyone is having a nice time. I love being around people, though. Always have. Still, I found that after solo camping and hiking, I am not a bit lonely. In fact,
I can now take as long or short of a time out as I want.
I can go left, right, up or down and no one is going to complain or have to be in a big hurry.

I did one time take a fellow's son trout fishing in PA because he suffered a heart attack and his boy was driving him crazy to go. Well, we got there and the kid polished off a container of yogurt and casually tossed it and the plastic spoon into the stream. I made him wade along for a good ways until he "fished" it out by hand. He couldn't see the big deal. We still managed to salvage a great time as I don't hold grudges and once I get mad, I get pretty GLAD again... :D The rest of the day went really well.

It's amazing how much junk you actually see in a some streams. I can walk along and suddenly see some piece of junk welded to the bottom sunk in mud that's been there for years. Especially closer to civilization, eh?

I definitely agree with the "music" comment while camping. When my kids were younger they could listen to their headsets on the way to camping, but once we were there the music was put away and we listened to the music of nature - a stream, birds, marmots, etc. Music to my ears. No trash - in fact, we would leave our campsites cleaner than when we arrived.

Just got back from Sonomish County, WA. LOTS of restrictions on music, generators, etc. It was WONDERFUL. You could actually hear the geese flying overhead in the evenings. Awesome. Too bad we have to have such restrictions but it keeps you from wanting to maim your "neighbor".
