I don't think it is a clay colored sparrow as I have never heard them buzzing. They just chirp. I will see if I can get a picture of one of them.

I am really POed. During the night something came and ate all those little baby birds. Four day old and that that was it.Poor Mama all upset.

I am so sorry, beegood. I've been there and I am POed for you. I lost a nest of chickadees earlier in the season and it wasn't a happy day!

Sorry about your loss. You hate to see the parent birds work so hard and then lose their nestlings. I wonder why some birds seem to choose such dangerous places to put their nests.

How many posts did we have on this forum this year with people finding nests, intentionally or unintentionally disturbing the surroundings, only to report on the very next day that the chicks were eaten. Too many!!!
Learn something from it. It is hard enough for birds to hide their nest from predators without us disturbing their cover or alerting a sharp-eye predator, (that could even be a blue jay), to the nest by climbing a tree or hovering few inches above the nest just to satisfy our curiosity and to take a picture.
Learn something from it and give them a chance!

I did not disturb that nest It was in my lily patch in plain few and just taking a picture of it does no harm. Before you accuse people of disturbing nests get the facts. If I had not seen it I probably would have sprayed it with round up. The babies were 3-4 days old before being eaten. It was not covered at all and only about 18 inches off the ground. I am not making excuses just letting you know if you don't have all the facts don't sound off. I hardly had to climb a tree or fence to see this nest.

I did not accuse you of anything. I am simply stating that it is not a coincidence that we have so many reports of chicks disappearing shortly after the nest is found and disturbed, intentionally or not. You can�t avoid unintentional disturbance but there is no reason to do it intentionally.
Showing pictures of nesting birds however, contributes to this problem. It encourages others to get similar cutesy pictures without any consideration for the well being of the chicks.

I would hardley call this a cutesy picture. Simply baby birds in a nest. And most of the people on this site are informed bird people who not rush out with their cameras to get pictures. But if they come across one that is as visible as this one was they like to share it. No harm done and this is my last word on the subject . And if I come across another nest as easy to get a picture of as this one I will. And I live in the country and have many bird nests around the place but I yet have to climb a tree to get a picture. Besides at 73+ it might prove difficult.

Only a month ago or so we had a person on this forum who with her kids climbed a tree to take a look and to take a picture. She said that she did it because baby birds are so cute and she was planning on returning to it as a summer project. The very next day she reported that the chicks were gone.
Conclusion? She said: too bad the Woodpecker's cavity she just found was to high to climb because she was ready to do it again. Other people in response said its ok to even move or remodel nests. Yes remodel.
Yet this is one more post where the pattern of nest disturbance and consequent chick demise is clearly shown. Don't assume that everybody is informed and knows what to do and what not to do.
And please don't take this personally because I know you simply found the nest by accident.

Well I think I am quite sure what killed those little baby birds. A damn cat. Seen it around before and this morning it was right close to where the nest was. And since it was so close to the ground it had no problem. I have no cats simply because of all the birds they kill so it really makes me angry to see this damn animal in my yard killing my birds.

beegood, don't feel too badly. The parent bird put that nest in a very dangerous place. If the cat didn't get them, a snake, raccoon, etc. would have. So many nests are lost to predators. It's a shame. A friend of mine had a very similar experience. The birds built their nest very low in a bush. One day we saw them jumping out, much too early for fledging. Then we saw the culprit: A snake.

No racoons and no snakes. Well in the last 40 years I have seen one tiny garter snake. If it was anything besides a cat that's nature but people shud keep their damn cats home. It's around here quite often. Might just put a trap out for it and hand it off to the SPCA or who ever will take it.

Here in town we have a bylaw...no cats allowed roaming free.
But...there are always people don't care, then we can pick up a trap, then owner pay's a fee to take it back.

Beegood, just to let you know that there was a nest of killdeer in my garden. We get them every year. I found it and decided it best to leave the weeds growing around it to camaflauge it.
