Tree has some sort of blight?

Hi, new to the forum. I have a Maple (I believe) and every Spring on some of the branches the leaves start to form and then wilt and die. New leaves try to form and the same sort of thing happens. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I live in Southern Ontario near the Great Lakes.

It is almost impossible to diagnose plant issues from a couple of online photos but Verticillium wilt - to which maples are extremely prone - can cause similar branch die offs. However, it needs a plant pathologist to correctly diagnose and I have no idea how one accesses those in Canada. Here, it would be the county extension service.

maples are in very tender growth right this minute i the great lakes area.. they were bare a week ago....

frost is possible this week ... if it freezes. maple leaves can be damaged ..

there is no way to tell what happened in previous years ..

these pix look like fast emerging .. very young ....maple leaves ...

too bad about the power lines in the tree ...

were you hit with the wet snow and ice storms we got west of detroit...

Thanks for the advice. I am looking/hoping for a shred of hope. I'm thinking that if I pear all the limbs down to just the tree stalk, I may be able to force the tree into dormancy and possibly new life for next year. Any other thoughts or advice on this?

Thanks to everyone for your help! Those of you that are saying it is an oak fungus, it is pretty hard. Is that normal for a fungus to be hard and crusty? I tried cutting one in half and it just disintegrated on me...Nothing of substance was inside when it did. It was just like breaking up a dirt dobber nest. Here is another picture of the same one. Oddly enough it had turned pink by the time I got home from work. Either way, I'll just get rid of them. Just wanted to try and find out what it was before I did. http://tinypic.com/r/k1vp77/5

As mentioned on the tree forum, that's a fungus and is likely to indicate a fungal rot in the tree.

Some of our 20 year-old Austrian Pines have Blight.

My parents sprayed theirs...kept them alive as long as they did it, but the trees all died when my parents decided it wasn't worth the expense. I didn't think fungus was usually the problem Austrian Pines suffered in the US. I thought it was usually the combination of bark beetles and pine wilt nematode.

Hi Ken, thankyou for your reply. The power lines are actually pretty far away from the tree... just and angle of the picture. We did get a pretty hard winter but this has happened for the last few years, same symptoms. I removed some of the lower branches in the very early spring to see if that would help. I think it may be what the first person mentioned 'Verticillium wilt'. I would like to give the tree the best chance of recovering.

If it is verticillium - and I'd want to confirm that before making any big decisions - then 'recovery' is not really an option. While the tree may continue to live for a good number of years, there is no cure for this pathogen and it will eventually prove fatal.

I should also note that the decline can also be very fast, with the tree dying in a matter of days.
