Hi everyone! I saw a Cedar Waxwing! 2nd time in my life!

Cedar Waxwings were the birds I chose, out of my birding book - the MOMBA LIFER - lol, that I always wished I could see. I saw one 6yrs ago, but I never got to enjoy them, they flew off as I took a quick photo and wasn't even able to ID them until I got hom they hightailed it out of there so quickly. WELL!

Yesterday, I was at my x's and there were TEN or more of them in the trees enjoying berries- I was hystatic!! AND I got some pictures of them too :) BEST DAY EVER

Good for you!! ..Wonderful birds, seems I'm spoiled and see them many times each summer and in the winter it's the Bohemian Waxwings we see.

Hi Kimmie, I hope you don't take offense when not many people answer your posts. It isn't a very busy place. I guess we're all freaking out in the corner somewhere, with our migraines, bleeding, backaches, toothaches, irritable moods.......hahaha....or with our thinking problems, we sometimes forget how to get back here! ;) How did your doctor visit go? I know when my uterus is full, my back, lower abdomen and legs hurt. Sometimes, in perimenopause, our uteruses get too thick, but don't shed, and that can lead to lots of spotting, heavy bleeding, and a heavy lower abdomen. I always would get sciatica in my leg, when my uterus was full! Perimenopause can be quite a challenge for some of us. I'm 56 and haven't had a period for about 2 years. YAY! My life has settled down tremendously, now that those hormones aren't fluctuating all over the place. But.....my ovaries are still tormenting me. I even spent Christmas day in the ER! ......had really bad ovary pain. Anyhow.....don't be shy to come here and talk. Just give everyone a while to find your posts. Let us know how the doctor visit went!

That sounds heavenly, Melissa! I can picture it all through your sensitive and vivid descriptions. I, too, find that Alfred de Dalmas takes awhile to grow into his charming potential, but when he does, each year just gets better. I'm curious to hear future reports on your Aennchen von Tharau. What is its origin? If your AvT turns out to be R Alba Maxima, wonder if every AvT is R Alba Maxima. I grow Maxima and have considered tracking down AvT for either my garden or a friend's. Yes, one must go through psychoanalysis in order to become an analyst (they are nearly all Freudian). It can take years and years. That kind of minute self-absorption could make anyone a bit looney. Most have a PhD, not an MD. But I did know an analyst in St Louis (who was part of the famed St Louis Psychoanalytic Institute), who was a delightful, very thoughtful man. He became interested in psychiatry and religion and wrote a couple of very interesting books on the subject. A classmate of mine from 4th grade through HS is also a member of the St Louis Psychoanalytic Institute). I was so hoping she would be at our 50th HS reunion but she was a no-show, so I have no idea what she is like today. She was brilliant all the way through school. Her family was Egyptian and her father was also a psychoanalyst who had trained under Anna Freud. They left Egypt for political reasons, and she was 9 years old when she joined us in 4th grade. She had attended a British school in Egypt and had the most exquisite english accent. She was tons of fun while we were schoolmates.

Just saw a Red Breasted Nuthatch at 2nd story window feeder!

I had not seen any of the RBN (red-breasted nuthatch) for perhaps 4 years, maybe longer. We are south of Babs, in mostly woods and wetlands with large areas of protected deciduous woods. There are black bear, and I don’t want to have them around our home and gardens, so none of our post feeders or bird tables are up. There are oaks and red maples about 40 feet away, and a small hawthorn (left lower corner) about 20 ft away and some tall white lilac bushes. The birds can queue up on those small trees, and fly off into the woods in the background. I was a bit surprised that the birds located these feeders soon after I put them up. First the prple finches, goldfinches and chickadees, followed by the white nuthatches, and titmice. Then the cardinals saw what was happening, then the bluejays. Downy woodpeckers too. Every now and then a starling drops by. Chipmunks and squirrels and mourning doves on the ground below, trying to hustle what little seed falls to the ground below. The dents in the feeders are from when they have been knocked off the suction hooks and hit the ground below. Its intertesting to note their behaviours and feeding styles. The cardinals come by for their last meal at deep dusk and come in the morning just as the dark is beginning to lift. I am a bit wary of any black bear sniffing the BOS out and coming by, even though they cannot access the seed. Black bears seem to be increasing in numbers in the past few years. When I’ve spotted them, I’ve spoken to them in a loud, deep bossy voice.

Oh what luck those are next on my list lol!! I'd love to come across a Bohemian !!

Thank you both for understanding my excitement- not many non-birders can grasp it- let alone understand the 'lifer' list!

Congrats! I started birding in Late summer/Autumn with a compact, so I never really got to see any birds..A few weeks ago I saw a cedar waxwing in the neighborhood, and 2 days ago one flew over my shoulder into my neighbors tree!

Congratulations! Waxwings are such beautiful birds and now you have a GREAT picture! They do visit my yard, but always WAY high up in a tree -- I'd like to get as decent a photo as you did --- great job!!!

Deanine thanks! I just got a new camera with a better zoom to it- I was looking at dslr's but, the weight with the additional lens on it- due to an injury I have w my arm, I couldn't shoot w it, so- back to point n shoots for now til/if I get better. I have a Canon powershot sx40, and also a Sony d-700 (or something like that idk lol) I love them both, you can find a good camera on craigslist believe it or not~ Just always ask HOW MANY photos they've taken with it, once it gets up over 1000-2000 they lose their sharp/crispness in the pics.

Congrats!!

Saw some for the first time ever this weekend. Was out fishing the other day and saw some flying around and landing in the tree just behind me!

I have the same camera (well, almost). I have the SX30 IS, which is the older model of the SX40 HS..Great camera series!
