Who has mealworms?

Haven't posted in a while. Have given up on Sunshine Mealworms. They keep pushing back their dates. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good place to buy? I still have BBs all around.

I haven't ordered from either of them in awhile but this summer I got my worms from either New York worms or Southeastern Insectaries. SI phone number is 877-967-6777, they had really high next day shipping to guarantee live deliver but I would think this time of year you could go with priority mail. New York worms ships priority but I know someone just had a problem getting an order from them, I hadn't had any problems with them though and they were nice worms. www.nyworms.com

Good luck! I just bought some dried mealworms yesterday and so far they haven't taken any but I am hopeful. I stopped ordering mealies and waxworms awhile ago as I know the Blues will be leaving soon. I have been getting some waxworms from walmart though and put out about 40 2x a day, these are smaller sized waxworms though. I also have the Bluebird suet nuggets out but so far no takers on that either.

How much of a leaf cover do you need for that? I don't really know. This is the first time I am planting in the front yard woods, after picking up sticks and limbs, trimming up some trees, pulling up tree seedlings, pulling up 'some' vines, and digging out lots and lots of May Apples, and raking aside all the leaf cover. Stringing the rows and doing the actual planting is the easiest part of the whole planting experience. I'd say the leaf cover is at least 6" or so. I kept watching the weatherunderground on the computer all day, hoping it would get warm. Even though it wasn't warm at 4 PM (was just 34 though it was sunny) I headed out to get a few planted. Surprisingly, I wasn't cold, the soil was wet, but not clumpy, my hands didn't get cold, and I managed to plant 15 little bags, 47 total bulbs. so all those from the front yard (city tree) went to the city for composting. How I wish I had trees that weren't all in the woods or at the edge of the woods. All the leaves at the edges of the yard are full of sticks and twigs. I used to sometimes go to friend's houses and do their leaves, just to get to bring them all home for the veggie garden. I've got this wonderful leaf shredder that reduces them 13 to 1, turning leaves into what I call brown gold. I think the little willow leaves should be fine. Last year I remember "discovering" that the open areas were frozen solid while those with some cover were not. I might be able to exploit that some year if I knew what to aim for. How deep? I wonder if you couldn't just cover an area with either clear plastic or black plastic to keep the warm in and the freezing cold out, thus lengthening the planting season so you could get in on the late sales, like from B and B's.

Ok, I called Grubco and they are refunding me a quarter of the cost of my original order - because that's about how many worms I told them I lost. The girl said that black dead guys means that they got too hot during shipping, but they were coming from Ohio to Delaware, and the northeast has been on the chilly side for the past week. Who knows. I know several folks said last week that their Grubco orders had been delayed due to high demand, so perhaps they're sending out whatever worms they can get their hands on to keep up and not screening as well as they usually would. Dee - how funny about the doves eating frass. You know so much about birds, even strange esoteric stuff like that. I'll keep it in mind. As I've said before - nature doesn't seem to waste very much... Blumz - I paid $20 plus $9.95 s&h for 5,000 worms. So even with the cost of the shipping and the dead worms, you are still paying twice as much. Then again, there's something to be said for not being nauseous all night because you had to spend two hours sorting through black oozy dead things. I think I'll try Sunshine for my next order and see if it goes a little better.

Thanks everyone. I must say I have been taking tons and tons of pictures when the babies come. I think there are three boys and a girl, but I am not sure. I love watching the six of them fly in. They are not staying in our yard for the most part they are back by the field behind our property but they come to eat regularly and I love love love to watch them. Kenn, I just got an order from Southern Insecataries yesterday, I must say even though they are pricey this year they do have really good worms and I love to order one day and have them the next. I am so hoping Sunshine has some available soon though that DHL shipping from Georgia is ridiculous! Oh and I checked that Duncraft site and it told me they offered free shipping on your first order only. Donna

Hi all, I am in Australia and raising mealworms for the local Noisy Miners. I have tried this mealworm thing before to no avail. I have three full tubs of mealworms (from tiny to fully grown) under the house that are brimming with grain mites. I'm still going to strain these and feed them to the 'locals' but I need to buy more worms to begin a new farm. I've had to consider heating as the new colony will live under the house. The old one was inside the house and when the mites broke out, I had a LOT of cleaning to do! After looking into all heating options (and reading all of your advice), I am thinking of buying a ceramic heating lamp with a thermostat. The basic idea is to put the beetles/babies container directly under the lamp with empty containers either side (for the egg-filled strained beetle subtrate). These 'sister containers' will benefit from the lamp, but to avoid overheating of the beetles, I will put the thermostat sensor in that box. Hopefully, by keeping an eye on the temperature and humidity (with a cheap Thermometer & Humidity Gauge) I will avoid those horrible mites. Oh, and for anybody that is interested, I've been playing around with a beetle container that I saw on youtube with the mite infested beetles to find what works best before I begin the new colony. So far, the best that I have found was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKJ52gW8i9M He does call it a 'Superworm box' but I've found that it works really well for the mealies (in a smaller box). I used a different substrate though, a roughly blended mix of corn flakes, wheat bix and oats. Instead of filling the bottom box, I gave it a little shake and let the loose stuff fall. When the beetles began to lay, the eggs/babies fell through and thrived in the lower box. Oh, I also used two of the same containers (he used a plastic container and a kitty litter container) and drilled air holes (with mesh) in the sides so the babies can breathe. Harold.....I'm the one Donna is speaking about having trouble getting my orders from nyworms.....and once again i've ordered and it has taken a week to get them but they do arrive in good shape....i asked my postmaster why its taking that long for priority from New York to Alabama and she said it should in no way take that long....3 to 4 days at the most is all it should take so i dont know whats happening between there and here....maybe you live closer and it wont take near that long as Donna doesnt seem to have any trouble....good luck !!!

i ordered from SI and the mealworms were small, not the size I ordered. I haven't bothered to re-order since their is still plenty of natural food around.

I had forgotten about that anita, SI did have small worms. New York worms has nice bigs ones. My Blues have been eating the dried mealworms lately. It has been freezing just about every morning here this week, don't think there are many live bugs around anymore, but they probably find some here and there. I expect the Blues to pack up and leave any day now. I have one more small container of Waxworms which they will get today and then that is it for them too. I have slowly weaned them down to only one small serving of waxworms a day. Looking forward to the next nesting season already. LOL!! I really don't like Winter and it is almost here.

I finally broke down yesterday and got some locally...small and expensive, but I miss seeing the BBs close up!

I just placed an order with NY Worms yesterday and they will ship on Monday. I've only ever ordered from Grubco, but their large size mealworms are unavailable. I'm anxious to see the delivery--a bit expensive, $45 for 5,000, but if the quality is good then I'll be happy. Grubco's shipping costs have gotten ridiculous--last order I paid more for the shipping than I did for the worms! NY Worms didn't charge for shipping, but their initial cost is so much more expensive than Grubco that I'm fairly certain the final cost would be the same with either company. We'll see.

I've been feeding my blues wax worms. They are plentiful and I'm finding that the bluebirds love them more than mealworms! I get my mealworms from Rainbow. They haven't had any mealworms for months and months - but they DO have waxworms. My blues just suck them up and are happy campers with the waxworms.

are the still eating the waxworms? We have around 5 to 7 blues around here and it is starting to freeze at night and they overwinter here...Sunshine has now pushed their dates to first of the year with no explanation for the mealies...pretty frustrating...

Oh yes - they scarf the waxworms down. I think that next season I'll feed waxworms from the get-go. They are very soft and squishy and the bluebirds absolutely love them.

My shipment from NY Worms arrived yesterday and the worms look great! Only 1 dead one in the whole batch. The order was shipped on Monday and took until Friday to arrive, which is a couple of days longer than Grubco. I'd say the quality is the same as Grubco, though. Wonder why NY Worms has the large size mealworms available and no one else seems to?

If there is a WBU near you, just buy some from there. They have in 500, 1000, 5000, and I think maybe even 10000 increments.

Here is what NY mealworms says on their website about their giant mealworms:

The so-called "Giant" Mealworms are created by spraying "common" Mealworms with an insect growth hormone to keep them growing instead of pupating as they would normally. Because of this, we feel that the "Giants" are a poor food choice for your Reptiles. However, we do highly recommend them as fishing bait!

The mealworms I ordered from NY Worms are the large size, just about an inch or so long--the same as Grubco's large size. Several of the other suppliers I checked were all out of this size. As for getting worms from WBU, I sometimes do it in a pinch but it's way too expensive if you're feeding on a regular basis. I think our Wild Bird Garden store is selling them 500 for between $6 and $7. Their prices have also gone up a bit due to the shortage, at least locally.

Southeast Insectaries's worms may be smaller than expected...I'm not sure since I've only ordered from them, but they fatten up a LOT in a week.

I just got an order of 10,000 worms; $41 for the worms so $20.50 per 5000, and then I paid $8.90 for DHL ground shipping which arrives in 2 days.

I was able to order from them when no one else had worms. And their service is unbeatable.

And I don't work for them!! LOL!

My birds never eat worms after about August. They do love the suet though as long as I crumble it up. It sure is cheaper.

No question it's cheaper. I feel pretty silly spending all this money, but I'm so worried they'll leave! My blues still LOVE their mealworms! They come every morning and gorge themselves. It's a wonderful thing. But I have suet out there too for later in the day. Not sure if they're eating it, but someone sure is!

I have been breeding large mealworms (approx. 1") in Bernville, PA for over 1 year now. Due to my success, I began a business in October 2008. I am still working on the cycles in order to have an on-going supply and, unfortunately, my supply is low right now. Good to know. My local source, a small wild bird shop, went out of business and closed a few days ago (in Ellicott City MD). I sure will miss them!

I'm getting them from Doctors Foster & Smith web site and have had my blues all winter in the eastern panhandle of WV, a family of four come several times a day. I also keep a good supply of Bluebird Banquet in the box feeder. If I don't put the worms out, they eat the banquet up pretty good.
