wrens taking over

For the third year in a row, wrens have evicted nesting chickadees from a birdhouse near my garden. This year my husband made a "wren guard" which seemed to be working, as a chickadee was sitting on a nest. Then I noticed the chickadee was no longer active and checked inside, only to discover the telltale twigs from a wren. It's very discouraging since we had bluebirds about 9 years ago and tree swallows after that in the birdhouses. I don't know if the wrens caused them to leave our yard, but I need some advice on what to do--if there's anything that can help. Should we keep the holes plugged for 2 years to keep EVERY bird out in hopes the wrens will stop trying to nest here? I know the wrens are part of the great scheme of nature, but I have no love for them.
