Linda, those wrens will keep you quite busy. They are a sneaky lot. I have no idea how big of a territory they claim, but it must make you very nervous to have them all around you. I sure hope Daddy Blue is able to keep a sharp eye out.

My husband thinks if we plug up the hole, the wrens will go to the other bluebird box so we'll just keep taking out the twigs. She builds a perfect circle of twigs morning and night. As I walk back from destroying her work if just look over and say, "Sorry little bird." I know it's for the best. I've figured out a way to stop feeling guilty about it; I just have my husband do it! Plus I keep picturing the destroyed bluebird eggs I've seen from what the Wren's can do. Thank you all for your advice. Now we just need our Blue's to start building!

Thank you both for your help - no need to apologize Kendra, I wasn't sure what help I was asking for! I am still so new at this I am afraid to take an action such as remove a nest. But I am going to do that today. The chickadees in our yard are such a joy, I feel very protective of them. And having seen the wren take over a second nestbox confirms what I was thinking. I will check the first nest for eggs/nest cup and if they are not there the nest will go. As for the second nestbox, it's in a tree so will take some time to check! connie-k - Keeping the wrens busy is a great idea. The only problem with that for me is that our three nestboxes are within eyesight of each other, so encouraging wrens to stay in our yard would not be good. Right now I am contemplating moving them farther apart, so I will keep the gourd tactic in mind. I will let everyone know what happens in the end, whether I outwit the wrens or they fool me...da da da daaaaaa.....

I would advise strongly against using black plastic netting and instead use tobacco netting. It may save the lives of many birds in the long run. I lost a male bluebird and cardinal in this type of netting. It was just awful and totally preventable, I was so sad about it for weeks. The tobacco netting I use is white plastic and although it may seem that less sun gets through, its actually fabulous for my berry plants. I use it for my blueberries. Its wonderful and no birds have gotten caught in it because they can easily see it.
